        Answer This Question

A:  We're happy to help, Lori. Since Rust-Oleum Varathane Classic Wood Stain is a penetrating product it can only be applied to bare wood surfaces. We recommend sanding down to bare wood before applying the stain. Not applying to bare wood can hinder the penetrating process and leave a tacky finish. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

Q:We had this stain applied to our hardwood floors 13 days ago and it continues to be uninhabitable due to the strong odors. All upholstered items left in the house appear to be holding the odor as well. We have windows open/fans running. Any advice?

          Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for reaching out, Lauren. For the best results, Rust-Oleum Varathane Classic Wood Stain needs to be applied an area with proper ventilation. If the stain remains to smell after ventilating this could mean it hasn't fully cured. Factors like heavy application can impact the stain's ability to fully cure. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

A:  Thank you for reaching out, Eddie. We wouldn't suggest that the Rust-Oleum Varathane Classic Interior Stain be used on an exterior application. The constant exposure to UV and weather will hinder the stains long term performance. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

                    Answer This Question

A:  We're happy to help, Misty. There is no difference in sheen between our Rust-Oleum Varathane Oil-Based Spar Urethane and the Water-Based. The only difference between the two in appearance is the Oil-Based dries with an amber hue while the Water-Based dries crystal clear. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14
