Q:Is it best to use the water-based or oil-based floor finish with this product? I’ve stained my foyer floor and it’s ready for the seal coat. My preference is low odor but wasn’t sure if the water-based finish works with this oil-based stain.

A:  Happy to help. Either our Rust-Oleum Varathane Ultimate Oil or Water Based Floor Finishes would be a great option to top coat our Rust-Oleum Varathane Premium Fast Dry Wood Stain. While either option will provide almost identical performance, there is a slight difference in the look. The oil-based floor finish will dry with a slight amber hue to give it that golden glow while the water-based dries to a crystal clear finish. The water-based also has less of an odor but still needs to be applied in a well ventilated area. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

Q:Can I use this on unfinished white knotty pine wood front door?

    Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for reaching out. Yes, Rust-Oleum Varathane Premium Wood Stain can be applied to knotty wooden surfaces. We recommend sanding using a more coarse sandpaper (60-80 grit) to ensure the pores of the wood are opened up. Since this will be applied to an outdoor surface it must be top coated using our Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Spar Urethane to properly protect the stain from UV. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-1-Quart-Clear-Satin-Water-Based-Spar-Urethane-Exterior-Wood-Sealer-2-Pack-250241H/202057149 -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

Q:How do I faux-paint a beachy Pottery Barn look with EIGHT pieces of now out of style, but once hugely expensive, Hendredon "campaign-style" furniture? The wood veneer is LACQUERED, and I do not have the patience or time to try to strip off the coating.

Q:Can we use anything other than mineral spirits to clean up excess stain? Our contractor got some on pre-finished hand scraped solid stranded bamboo flooring. We're worried about damaging the finish on the bamboo.

A:  We're happy to help, Michael. If removing excess Rust-Oleum Varathane Premium Fast Dry Wood Stain right after applying then no solvents have to be used. The solvents are only meant to remove product that is starting to tack up and partially dry on the surface. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

          Answer This Question

A:  We're happy to help, Deb. Rust-Oleum Varathane Premium Fast Dry Wood Stain needs to be applied to bare wood only. It must properly penetrate into the pores of the wood. For fiberglass surfaces we would recommend our Rust-Oleum Varathane Gel Stain. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-1-qt-Mahogany-Wood-Interior-Gel-Stain-2-Pack-339585/305594590 -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

Q:What’s the difference between the dark walnut premium and dark walnut classic? Are the colors the same?

            Answer This Question

A:  We're happy to clear things up, Barry. While our Rust-Oleum Varathane Classic Dark Walnut Wood Stain and Rust-Oleum Varathane Classic Dark Walnut Wood Stain have the same color name the formulation of these stains are different. This will cause subtle differences in the color and will be noticeable if applied next to one another. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

Q:Tape peeled finish of black cherry desk. See pic. Material does not appear to be real wood. Found Varathane spray stain, in Cherry. Does a spray stain exist for black cherry? If not, what would you recommend to repair? I can repaint the entire surface.

              Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for reaching out, Larry, we're happy to help. Our Rust-Oleum Varathane Fast Dry Black Cherry Wood Stain is currently not available in an aerosol spray. If tape is removing the stain it sounds like there may be too much product on the surface. We recommend taking a mineral spirits dampened rag and wiping down the surface. The areas where the stain lifted can be sanded, and the stain can be reapplied. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

                Answer This Question

A:  We're happy to help. We recommend applying Rust-Oleum Varathane Fast Dry Wood Stain using a brush or lint free rag, however, this stain can not be applied to floors or stairs without a floor finish. The wood stain will need to be top coated using Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Floor Finish. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14
