While either option will provide almost identical performance, there is a slight difference in the look. The oil-based floor finish will dry with a slight amber hue to give it that golden glow while the water-based dries to a crystal clear finish. We recommend sanding using a more coarse sandpaper (60-80 grit) to ensure the pores of the wood are opened up. If tape is removing the stain it sounds like there may be too much product on the surface. We recommend taking a mineral spirits dampened rag and wiping down the surface.
