This seems like pretty good topsoil. I needed quite a few bags to fill a garden area. It's nice, dark and appears fertile. I found very little in the way of stones or other debris in any of the 25 bags I used.

Perfect for my needs. Placed 10 bags around our river birch tree to cover the roots that, after time, were beginning to show. Then, planted some lovely inpatients and, covered the top soil with Earthgrow red mulch.

Look closely at the picture provided by HD, and their product descriptions. Threre is a considerable amount of sand mixed in with the soil. OK for filling in low spots but be prepared to add REAL topsoil on top if you want anything to grow. I added this to a low edge along my driveway, planted seed, covered the seed with more of the same. One rain and all I saw was a complete covering of sand (see attached photo). Not what I expected, will not use this again except for initial elevating of low spots in my yard.

Delivered exactly what I needed! I've been using this product for some time now. I've read the reviews before purchasing and they were definitely mixed. I definitely got what I purchased! D I R T ! This topsoil product is nice and dark. Last year I had to remove a large tree from my front yard. I got the stump grinded and since then the area has been sinking from excess decomposition from the root ball & left over buried mulch. I've added 10 bags over the past month and have gotten 97% dirt. Yeah, I've gotten a rock here and there about the size of a marble. Yeah, I've gotten a piece of mulch here and there. However, H E Y! Its dirt. I haven't had no problems either with any weeds growing as well. I would recommend it to anyone.

A little lumpy. Some bags were very moist and others were drier. Soil needed to be broken up by hand because when it dried it became harder lumps. Other than that, we have used this topsoil for 3 projects this year!

Value for the dollar is great! Love the price of this item, we purchased 15 bags (600 lbs) for the raised garden, and it was more than enough. No foreign things in the bags, which was great to see. This soil did meet all of the expectations we had, and will certainly make for a bountiful selection of vegetables.

I didn't realize we needed to read REVIEWS for TOP SOIL, but I wish we had! We bought 30 bags of this and put it down with grass seed on top of it. It was dusk and we were just dumping it out and spreading to get it down as quickly as we could, and the next morning when we were watering it, we could see it's not really soil at all- more like a mixture of mulch and sticks, with little soil, if any. Now that I am looking at reviews I'm so frustrated- many have said the same thing! I should have researched it before purchasing. I hope our grass seed is able to come up amidst the sticks and mulch. And I hope it doesn't sink as the wood decomposes This is not at all what I was looking for. I'm surprised that Home Depot sells this junk and labels it top "soil". This is misleading and a terrible product.

              Top Soil??? you mean MULCH!
I read the reviews but figured how bad can this be, its still sold as topsoil right? There are also different brands in different regions, they can't all be bad? WRONG. This comes out as clumps of sticks & rocks. It wouldn't even spread. I bought a couple bags as a test & glad I did, It wasn't even worth packing bags up and driving back to the store for a refund.... although I would love to out of principle. Better topsoil can be found for not much more

              Better screen it!
Way too many contaminants: brick, ceramics, sticks, LOTS of rocks, rope, rubber chunks from looks like a ball, a ribbon, globs of clay - like an artist would make bowls with... I bought 10 bags to top over some thin areas to enhance topsoil and reseed. Thought I got most of it when I was spreading it but I'm still picking rocks out of it. The soil itself isn't bad, just not good for 'topping off low spots' as advertised.

Great value for lawn use, but check your local store source
Yesterday, I used the last 3 bags of this top soil and went online last night (love the convenience of ordering online and having my order ready for pick-up when I get there) to find more. Well, I couldn't find the same brand - anywhere. Not only that - I couldn't find a top soil or any other kind of soil that had a good rating! So, I decided to order this "nameless" brand from Home Depot and just take my chances. Well, what do you know? When I got to the store, the bag was the same as my old ones! (see pic) It is from a local source near Tyler, TX where my Home Depot is located. So, I think the bottom line is that you need to check your local store. And, that's why there's such a disparity on the reviews. As long as I keep getting this same brand - dark rich soil - the kind everyone wants - to used in bare spots to get my St. Augustine to spread, I'll keep buying!

                PERFECT FILL SOIL
Everyone is complaining but the description CLEARLY says it's "FOR FILLING IN HOLES, LEVELING LOW AREAS, AND BUIDING UP GARDEN BEDS". Yes it's a soil/sand/mulch/gravel mixture, but it's medium-fine. EXACTLY what I needed for filling in holes, and generally leveling my entire back yard. It's solid too, so I'm not sinking in when I walk on it, thanks to the sand & gravel in there. Also used it to offset the clay that's compacted on top from all the digging & construction. I bought 240 and am going to get another 240 bags to finish. I'm actually going to plant ground-cover over this, instead of grass. So tired of maintaining grass & weeds.

                Poor compost
Bought 8 bags. All were basically compost with a lot of wood chips, sticks, plastic, wire and some rocks. I guess it is true - You get what you pay for.

                great fine mix
I was put off by the reviews but decided to try it anyhow as a I needed something cheap to occasionally put down on my grass plug area for erosion control until it's established.. I didn't have any sticks or rocks in my bags that I bought. The label had the name 'Earthgro' on it. The soil itself is a deep brown color. The only thing I took a star off for is the sand content.. I didn't notice it until I watered the ground but it left a coating of white sand crystals as shown in my photos below. I don't think this will affect growing of anything but i'd prefer not to have it in the mix.. If you're filling with this it's a great mix.. but i'd mix in some bags of the Black Cow in the yellow bag for optimal growing.. Ingredients: This product is regionally formulated from organic and inorganic materials derived from one or more of the following: peat, forest products, compost, ash, sand or native topsoil. Approximate Coverage In Square Feet per bag: 1" high- 9 sq ft 2" high- 4.5 sq ft 4" high- 2 sq ft 6" high- 1.5 sq ft

                Great price. Lots of sand
I didn't find any stones or trash in the ten bags I purchased. The mix contained a lot of sand, but I don't think the amount will negatively affect a planting bed. A big bag - a good value.

                Cheap and awesome!!!
Not sure why people complain about getting sand and sticks in their soil. I bought 1 bag just to make sure the soil is good quality and not end up with the same sandy and stick soil people were complaining about. As I thought, nothing but good soil. No sand ,no sticks, no clumps. I build a raised bed garden and needed a bunch of these. So I bought two pallets worth. That's 120 bags. I am more than pleased and happy. Healthy plants growing!! Red label soil bag at 1.67 a piece, can't beat that! I mixed mine with some composted manure and added some miracle grow soil on top as well. I added a picture with my garden and just this soil, not the finished product.

                  My First Garden
I worked hard to till my yard and prepare my beds for my first ever garden. I was discouraged to find my soil had a clay consistency and wouldn't be able to grow my vegetables. Because of the great price of this topsoil, I was able add enough good soil to the tops of my bed to have a successful garden!

                  Undesirable Product
I bought 10 bags of this product. Each bag contained some form of non-organic material that made this product hard to rake evenly. There were rubber bands; pieces of plastic bags; pop-top lip openers; pieces of plastic; insulated wire; pieces of brick and stones. The product was lumpy and contained clumps of clay. Attached is a picture of some of the material that I picked out of the "topsoil".

                    Dirty Dirty Topsoil
This is dirt. It is dirty. It provides a good base for growing grass when leveling a lawn. The dirt performed very well. When I opened the bag of dirt, inside, I found... dirt. Not only would I buy it again, I have bought it again. If you are looking for a bag of rocks, do not buy this bag of dirt. If you are looking for a bag of dirt, then this product is for you.

                    Great Value, Great performance
I bought 10 bags of this top soil to level off and plant grass seed in my front parkway. The top soil was rich and moist and worked great for this project, I now have a front parkway that is level and has new green grass.

                    Scott's Earthgro Topsoil Sewer Odor
DO NOT BUY I bought 10 bags of Scott's Earthgro Topsoil. A very nice male employee loaded dry intact bags into my car on top of plastic. On the drive home, I was nauseated from the offensive sewer like odor coming from the bags even with the windows down and the AC on. The bags were removed from the car immediately. I have washed the interior of my car and trunk multiple times, left it opened up in my garage, sprayed it with lysol and even put bowls of vinegar on the floors overnight. Tonight, I will try charcoal. Three days later and the horrible odor is still there and makes being in my my car unbearable. Something that leaves an overwealming lingering smell of feces cannot be healthy. If you are a Seinfeld fan, remember the episode with the restaurant parking attendant's BO stinking up Jerry's car. That's my car now. Any suggestions on how to get this horrendous unhealthy odor out of my car????????

Afraid to open bags because of smell
1st off, Mountain Home, Ar lists this as an unnamed brand, shows it in a CLEAR plastic bag, and states MH has 2400+ bags. Read the description and states the brand is Earthgro. Go to the store and its Timberline Soil. No top soil to be found where I live 60 mi. away, except Scotts, which in my opinion is pulverized mulch. Drove to HD MH because it is advertised in clear plastic bags and I can see the product. Lawn and Garden employee(s), two girls, claim if I want that product it's an online only order. Nowhere on the website does it state 'online only'. Frustrated driving so far in 90 degree heat, I purchased 15 of the Timberline Soil, in a WHITE plastic bag, that doesn't allow me to view the product. Probably 5 miles after I left, an odor is manifesting in my SUV. Can't decide if it's the smell of Asphalt or Rubber. Arrived home, realized I couldn't leave them in my vehicle, as the odor would permeate my car. Couldn't unload in garage for same reason. Bags are sitting outside along house. Open my car door this morning and it's an asphalt smell and it's lingering in my vehicle. placed a rag of vinegar in car to hopefully absorb smell. WHAT DID I BUY? IF I OPEN A BAG WHAT AM I DUMPING ON MY PROPERTY? Dirt does not smell like Asphalt.
