In order to properly dispense this product, the "inner foil seal" must be punctured. If this foil seal is not properly punctured or the nozzle opening is cut too a very narrow diameter, it will create a too narrow of a restriction for the product to flow (without the use of excessive force). If the burst strength of the package is exceeded, product may leak from the rear of the cartridge (plunger). This is a fail-safe designed to prevent the cartridge wall from rupturing. This condition can also occur if the product has thickened due to exceeding its shelf life or if dried material is physically blocking the nozzle (between initial use/re-use attempts). When excessive force is required to apply the sealant, it is often a signal that the product is aged/beyond shelf. All of DAP's various sized "cartridge" formulas should only require moderate hand squeezing action for application (when using a good quality caulking gun). The amount of force you appear to be describing, would appear to be excessive. life. Likewise, application through a restricted nozzle tip opening and/or failure to properly puncture the cartridge's inner foil seal can also result in application difficulty. All of DAP's various sized "cartridge tubes" should only require moderate hand squeezing action for application. Based on your description of the difficulty encountered while attempting to apply the product, it would appear that you may have purchased aged product (newly purchased may not necessarily be of recent manufacture). Likewise, attempting to apply thick paste-like fillers through too narrow of a tip opening can significantly increase the amount of force required to dispense the product. Based on your commentary, it would appear to signal that the inner foil seal was not broken/punctured prior to attempting to apply the product. As indicated on the product package label guidance: "2. Cut nozzle at a 45º angle to desired bead size. 3. Puncture inner foil seal. 4. Load into caulk gun. 5. Fill gap w/sealant". Failure to puncture the inner foil seal (Step #3) will not permit the product the flow from the application tip as intended and will likely result in product bypassing the plunger creating the condition as you describe.
