Split dangerously in first 30 minutes of use.
Purchased yesterday and went with the wooden handle version versus the fiberglass. The strength of the forged head was no match for a very rough rocky/silty soil and made quick work of a stump's roots. However, within the first 30 minutes of use digging into the ground, the shaft split in half, in a sharp, splintered fracture. I was lucky that it was a clean split with no kickback. This could've ended really poorly. Really disappointed.

Bent, Split, Cracked.... Broke This is the third mattock I've had from Home Depot. The first one bent then broke, the second one (the fiberglass handled version) bent too far to be useful, and finally this one. I'm getting used to the low quality, I guess, so I don't push it very hard. First the blade bent. This usually happens trying to cut a root off. If you really hit the root it will just bends the blade. It helps if you take a grander and sharpen the blade (it's dull from the factory). That way the blade cuts better and doesn't bend as easily. Next the handle split from the plastic guard to half way down the handle. I fixed this by wrapping heavy nylon cord tightly around the handle. I got quite a bit more use from it after that. Then the other day I was digging in rocky dirt and the handle cracked inside the plastic and broke off. I guess they have a lifetime warranty on these now, so I'll take it back and maybe another one to use for a few weeks.

I used this pick to dig a retaining wall footing that was 51 feet long and 2 feet wide and 3 feet deep. It worked great and handled well. I wore the heck out of it as you can see with the photo attached. Hey...with the lifetime warrantee, with no questions asked I will probably replace it soon.

Very sturdy. Hacked through roots easily. Able to take leverage to remove stumps.

I can mine lots of blocks with it. It also softens up desert dirt and rock pretty well.

I got this model because of the rubber insert between the head and handle with the hope that it would last longer than the last two, without the rubber insert, that I purchased from Home Depot in the past. The heads of the last ones I bought separated from the shaft.
