We are sorry to hear the cam on the fiberglass pole would not tighten down and so was clearly defective. If you have not already disposed of it please reach out to ask for a replacement.

In store at Home Depot, the 2-piece, 16' pole is a residential grade .08mm, typical for most homeowners, while there are commercial grades available on homedepot.com (1mm)

Many Pool Service people look for a fiberglass pole, for its' weight!
I agree a child would have a problem using a commercial pole like this one.

We are sorry you received a defective pole!
Yes, a fiberglass pole is significantly heavier than a standard residential aluminum pole, but the cam should work well to extend and contract the length of the pole.

By nature, fiberglass poles are heavier than standard aluminum which is why lots of pool professionals gravitate toward using it.
The fiberglass will not splinter off by moving your hands along the body of the pole.
We hope you will get used to it and find it is a good tool to have on hand!
