Was expecting loam, but seems to have a lot of fill in it.

I purchased around 75 bags of this topsoil to level out 2 lawns and add some grass seed to bare areas. Initially I thought it was good but when I went to my beach house this weekend I was extremely disappointed. I had installed 25 bags to level out several low areas and after a few rainy days, All of the dirt disappeared and only mulch is left. The mulch is killing my grass and I had to basically get on my knees and spread out the mulch to allow my grass to obtain sunlight. For the cost of $ 7.97 per bag would have expected much better soil percentage. I have added a few pictures below. I am very disappointed at the product especially at the price and I would not recommend buying it.

DO NOT BUY THIS STUFF. It is more bark and twigs than actual dirt. You would think a company like Scotts would know the difference between "soil" and "mulch", but I guess not.

I bought Scotts Turf Builder Lawn Soil instead of one of the many other less expensive brands of enriched lawn soil, thinking I would go ahead and get "the best". Unfortunately, it's not the best. I came across about a dozen little pieces of sharp plastic. My 3 year old granddaughter runs through our yard barefoot. She would surely cut her feet if I hadn't raked the soil carefully and looked for all the little pieces (after finding a couple I started looking closely). I finally took a picture of the last two I found. Next time I might as well get the cheaper brand. Very disappointed.

Bought 5 bags of This product and sifted out almost 3 seven gallon nursery pots’ worth of rocks, sticks, wood chunks, bits of plastic, string and wire. So disgusted. Had a similar problem a few years ago with Miracle Gro potting mix. Should have learned my lesson.

I can't believe I paid a premium price for this product. Thought I would buy this over the $1 bags I often get, but turns out those $1 bags were much higher quality. These Scotts bags I got were nothing but wood and sticks with a dirt coating. I would never consider this topsoil for growing grass (I spent 1 1/2 years in a soil science lab - U. of Florida). It will take years for the sticks and wood to decay, tying up nitrogen in the process. Also, the large volume of larger size particulates appear big enough to block grass from growing (in my experience). I think i will have to scrape up all the Scotts and grass seed I put down and try something else. What a waste of time.

I bought 3 big bags of Scott’s TB lawn soil . The two I used in the front were fine . The one bag I put in my backyard to reseed bare spots near my patio/house are now after two weeks producing hundreds of small weeds . Wish the grass Scott’s sun n shade grew as fast :)) used new same big bag of Scott’s sun n shade seed .now I don’t know what to do . All my probucts are Scott’s sun n shade seed, new seed fertilizer ,weed &feed, grubex,fungus, fall fert oh n crabgrass preventer. I didn’t have weeds before now there are hundreds .

I bought 10 bags and they all had grubs. I guess they will sell me the grub killer too

Several years ago the first time I used this product it restored a dead and dieing front lawn. I was impressed with how it rejuvenated my lawn but disappointed with all of the debris left behind. I have since overcome that problem by using a 1/4" screen and screening each bag to remove the debris. I screen each bag during the summer and place the screened material in the original bag and store it in my shed for a fall overseed. It takes about two hours to screen three bags and is well worth the effort because the resulting material yields excellent results. Attached photos show the amount of debris contained in three bags and the second is my screen place on the wheel barrow. The resulting debris is then washed before disposing and the resulting water is used to water tough spots on the lawn because there are still nutritive properties in it. It works for me!

I read the bag on this product after buying some other topsoil that had nothing but wood chips Wich I paid $1.57 a bag I used it and my grass wouldn't grow so I tried Scott's it talks a big story for $8.00 a bag only to find out it also was nothing but wood chips I am not falling for it again. so I am taking back the remaining 10 bags and buying topsoil from the landscape company that sells real topsoil not trash

Covered well, didn't wash away when watered and the seeds underneath are starting to grow. Nice spell also.

Perhaps Scotts sees opportunity in creating a new product by which no comparison can be made, yet the brand name can fetch top dollar. Or perhaps they have a lot of by-product laying around and wish to monetize. Either way, the bag is full of mostly mulch, not soil. But hey! Nobody else calls it LAWNSOIL so the 300% markup over mulch is ... justified, I guess is their thinking. Do not buy this product. You should not be spreading mulch where you want to grow grass. That is precisely the mistake waiting for you here.

I bought three bags of the Turf Builder and three bags of Scott’s less expensive topsoil and the less expensive one was a complete mess. Turf Builder contained practically no twigs and certainly no glass or metal. I am extremely happy with the Scotts Turf Builder

full of rocks and pieces of wood and rubber, I might as well gotten the topsoil bag at $5 cheaper per bag. I am not one to give bad reviews but I had to on this product, because Scotts is a name i trust and use for all me seeds and fertilizer needs.

used this product on a small area first my grass came out great. then planted seed on a bigger area and did not work out well. so laid the lawn soil and voila here came my beautiful grass. I highly recommend this product.

Works as a kind of slowly released source of humus when lightly spred across the lawn and then aeriated into the soil before seeding.

I used this for top soil in a small backyard in Nashville, TN. Technically, a top soil load would have been a little cheaper .... BUT .... the soil is not as high quality as this, (i.e. rocks in load of top soil). Two other big advantages .... I saved my back by avoiding a shovel and wheel barrow method ... and spreading was as simple as spreading out 30 lb bags. Very easy and efficient ... no back breaking work here.

This is garbage both literally and figuratively. I purchased 4 bags of this thinking i was going to get some great soil for $6.97/bag. Boy, was i wrong. This soil was full of garbage. Pop bottle caps, plastic, shreds of tarp, chunks of clay, wire, candy wrappers, and wood. see pictures. I emailed Scotts yesterday from their website but received no reply- so i assume like most business- they don't care- they already got my $6.97. As a side note i needed more soil so i purchased 4 bags of "Garden Magic" for less than half the price and guess what i found in the bag- NOTHING but great, fine ground clean brown tops soil.

I've actually had success growing grass with this soil but the quality control is terrible. Like other reviewers have said, there is literally garbage in the soil. I've found plastic, parts of action figures, wood, and sharp pieces of metal. It's unacceptable.

Good product grass started to grow in 4 days. After about 7 days it now 1 to 2 inches tall.

My wife and I had to completely redo our 3000 square feet front lawn, following a drier than normal Colorado winter. We purchased 220 1.5 bags of Scott's Lawn Soil, and two 40lb. bags of Scotts Contractor seed. It took us two days to put down the soil and rake it out, and top with seed (raked in). Within two weeks we had abundant grass coming up! Within four weeks, we had a beautiful lawn! The neighbors all asked how we did it! We are so very pleased with the results!

First off, I was leery after reading the reviews about foreign objects in the product. I found it in my local store and felt the material through the plastic bag and it felt ok. I wished there had been a clear plastic view window on the packaging to give me a better "preview" of what I was buying. I need it to "fix" a lawn area that had been seeded by someone else. The seed had just been scattered on top of hard ground without breaking the surface up or raking the seeds in. I used four bags, roughly 120 lbs and hand spread it it. I mean that literally, my hand was every bit of the soil. I used a large plastic colander to spread it evenly in some areas. In all 4 bags I found 2 pea size pieces of something hard maybe gravel and 3 small pieces of wood chips. The wood chips were no bigger than a wood chisel shaving and broke up under finger pressure. I thought it worked very well and got excellent results especially considering the fact no surface soil prep had been done.

Works very well to prep bare spots on lawns. Use with Pennington One Step seed and watering twice a day.

I recently purchased this product as a base for spot repairs in my yard, so I only use a handful here and there as I need it. Upon opening the bag I and reaching in for a few handfuls, I was surprised to find a sharp, bent up, stainless steel hose clamp stuffed in the bag. I did not notice this in the bag, until it jabbed my finger. The bag was completely sealed, so this is a Scotts issue of packaging. The product itself (dirt) seems to work ok (thus 2 stars and not 1), but due to the apparent lack of quality control at the Scotts processing plant, I will not be purchasing this product ever again. I will re-evaluate my other lawn care choices as well. I caution anyone that purchases any Scotts product to beware of foreign material.

A very good soil, easy to spread in the area I wanted, I used it as bed-spread for planting new grass seeds. I will buy it again as soon as need it again, Good Soil, Uncle Sam

Will never by this junk again. All kinds of garbage in the soil. Found many pieces of plastic and mulch.

I used this Turf Builder lawn soil to help patch up my lawn following the installation of a lawn sprinkler system. lt worked quite well as can be seen in the picture. However, users should be aware that ground preparation and regular watering are key to success in starting grass. In my particular case, I had a number of trenches dug for the pipes as well as a number of large bare spots. I used bags of heavier and much cheaper topsoil to fill the trenches, because the Turf Builder product is a mixture of some soil, peat moss, and fertilizer and is more appropriate for surface use where the grass will be growing. I used a garden tool to loosen the dirt in the bare spots, then spread the Turf Builder product over the top of the trenches and bare spots, and used the tool to mix it in. I then spread the grass seed and lightly scratched the surface to mix it in slightly. To keep the ground moist, I used the sprinkler system to water the areas for about 10 minutes a day. After about two weeks and a couple of soaking rails, the grass sprouted and is growing as shown in the picture. I think this approach was easier and more successful that my previous attempts to patch my lawn.

Well screened, enhanced topsoil. I needed to fill some squirrel-dug holes and grass-less patches in a newly planted lawn area and this soil was perfect. It stayed moist longer to help the reseed come up faster. I just sprinkled the soil where needed and threw some new seed on it. I had the new seed growing in about 10 days.

Works well to improve poor soil conditions in your yard. I like this product very much.
