      Answer This Question

When applying Scotts Turf Builder Lawn Soil, prepare the application area by digging out dead grass and weeds. Loosen the existing soil with a rake then add 1 inch of Scotts Lawn Soil to the application area and spread evenly. For best results, mix 1 inch of Scotts Lawn Soil into the top inch of the existing soil. NOTE: If depth of area is not within 1 inch of the existing grade after removing dead grass and weeds, additional Lawn Soil may be required. IMPORTANT: Mix thoroughly to avoid creating a distinct barrier layer between Scotts Lawn Soil and the native topsoil. This will allow grassroots to expand easily for more vigorous growth. If laying sod, cut the sod to fit the area precisely. Do not leave gaps between pieces of sod as this creates a home for weed seeds.

Is this screened to remove large clumps?

        Answer This Question

We do screen our soils prior to packaging however they will still contain some larger pieces of media. These bits of wood and bark are intentional and an important part of the soil composition, maintaining moisture levels for germinating grass seed and introducing additional nutrients into the soil as they break down.

I recently purchased bags of Turf Builder Lawn Soil and the product was mostly wood chips. It was definitely not what I would call soil. Attached is a picture that shows the product as I applied it to my lawn.

            Answer This Question

Yes, Scotts Turf Builder Lawn Soil can be used as a top dressing for any lawn type. To get the best results, when planting seed or sod, mix 1 inch of Scotts lawn soil into the top inch of the existing soil. Mix thoroughly to avoid creating a distinct barrier layer between Scotts Lawn Soil and the native topsoil. This will allow grassroots to expand easily for more vigorous growth. (Note: There are very few exceptions to this rule, and they rarely come up).

Great soil for repairing bare spots and overseeding. Easy to spread, and my grass started filling in nicely. Definitely helped improve the look of my lawn and I would buy it again!

I used this Scott's Turf Builder Lawn Soil to over seed some bare spots on my front lawn. The seeds germinated within 6 days of application. I believe the added nutrients in this soil helped the seeds to germinate quickly. I will be using this soil again this fall to over seed some other areas.

After I purchased, I noted a few bad reviews. Well, I'm no green thumb but after 6 days my grass is growing.

                      Not for growing seeds
The first rule of planting grass seed is to remove all debris, not add more. This soil has so many wood chips and rocks that I had to sift it before I could use it. Even then, I had about a 50% germination rate. I have never had such poor results.

This product is nothing like it is advertised. It is full of mulch, big chunks of wood and I had a ruff time breaking it up to spread. When I finally did it completely killed whatever lawn I put it on and wherever I put seed never grew a blade. I had to completely re-till and start over with something totally different. Ended up costing me triple the money and a lot more time on my lawn. What a mess. All they did is reimburse me the 2 bags of soil but my time and money went down the drain.

Our soils are manufactured from processed forest products with additional small pieces of wood and bits of bark added to the mix. These larger pieces of media serve a few different purposes, the most important for lawns being aiding with moisture retention to encourage seedling growth. They also introduce additional nutrients into the soil over time as they break down.

Not sure how Scotts can call this soil. Nothing but wood chips. Not worth the extra price.

Most modern potting mixes and garden soils are formulated from composted forest products rather than actual dirt. This clever blend delivers rich organic nutrients while preventing the heavy compaction that happens with traditional topsoil. Those coarser bits of bark are essential because they create tiny air pockets, allowing your plant's roots to breathe and thrive. In fact, professional growers specifically choose media with a high bark content because it is simply superior for potted plants. While you should never find huge, chunky logs in your mix, those little bits of wood are working hard to help your garden grow.

The “soil” looks like mulch. There may be soil in the mix but there is way too much bark and twigs. Grass is not growing.
