Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to commonly asked questions

Do standby generators make a lot of noise?
If you want a quiet unit, ask about a larger, liquid-cooled model. While air-cooled models are smaller, they tend to operate more loudly than liquid-cooled generators.
How long will it take for my emergency generator to start?
Backup generators are installed to provide seamless power in the event of an outage and will automatically turn on when your power goes out.
Can I run my generator all the time to help ease my electrical bill?
No. Your generator should be used as a temporary power source during emergencies. It is best used to keep essential appliances running when your main source of power is unavailable.
What powers my generator?
You may choose either natural gas or liquid propane gas as a fuel source. If you already have a gas connection, we will contact your gas company to get your generator hooked up to it. A separate service may be required for propane.
What brands of standby generators does The Home Depot install?
The Home Depot offers standby generators from industry leading brands such as Briggs & Stratton, Generac and Kohler. Product and brand availability varies depending on location. For more information, ask a Home Depot associate or authorized service provider.
What are the leading causes of power outages in North America?
The leading cause of lost power is strong storms, which are responsible for 47% of power outages. Equipment failure causes 34%, while 12% are due to snow and ice storms during the winter months. The remaining 7% is due to unknown causes.

Salesmen sold me a full house generator that did not match up to my gas meter. I made it very clear to him that I wanted him to take complete control of this so when I received my generator, there would be no problems. The generator has been installed, not correctly, I have already made a payment, and my generator to this date is not functional. Waiting on Consumers Power to do their thing and also waiting on the installers to finish up.(Installers showed up to install with no tools, I had to lend them mind, no product to set it properly on the ground, and used my material to anchor it to the ground, which to this day, they have not replaced. Gas meter was undersized and had copper going into the ground. I heard the second part of this from the Gas company, my salesmen should of investigated this before he sold me the unit. Salesmen to this day has not called back to see if everything was completed. Not very satisfied with how all this was handled.

The entire experience was wonderful. Brian and Sean from Ben King & Sons Electric were very easy to deal with and very knowledgeable. The quoted price was exact for the 16KW propane fired Generac and once I coordinated with my propane company everything went smoothly. Now I can go online and check status of the generator so there’s no guessing if it is ready. The price included everything - installation, transfer switch, concrete pad, battery, cold weather kit and in the springtime burying the cable underground. I couldn’t be more pleased. I look forward to dealing with Ben King in the future.

How Standby Generators Work

When utility power and electricity is lost—whether it’s due to a storm, equipment failure, or something else—your installed standby generator is ready to help keep your home running smoothly. Always in standby mode, the generator will sense the power is out and turn on automatically to restore electricity within seconds. While everyone else is left in the dark, your standby generator quickly restores electricity in your home to keep your appliances, lights, and other electrical equipment operating normally. When utility power returns, the generator senses the change and returns to standby mode, ready for the next emergency.

Installing a Home Generator

If you’re interested in a home generator, a local installer will perform a free in-home consultation to determine the ideal generator size for your home and needs. Depending on the extent of your standby power needs, our generators can power everything from air conditioning units to security systems and kitchen appliances with no refueling or extension cords needed.

During setup, your installer also will help determine the best placement for your generator outside your home. Here are some things our generator installer will look for:

  • A clear space with open airflow to provide ample room for potential service and maintenance in the future;
  • A location near the fuel supply but away from the dangers of rising water;
  • A flat area—with a couple of inches of space on each side—for a secure bed of gravel, crushed stone, or even a small concrete pad, if desired.

After safely installing and connecting the gas line, the local installer will check for leaks to ensure your generator is properly installed and ready to act as an emergency power source for your home. Although battery power may be used during installation, the generator still needs to be activated via prompts for a full system setup. Once activated by the installer, your new generator will be ready to automatically turn on in the event of a power outage.
