A combination of natural stone and man-made materials, quartz is durable, low maintenance, and easy to care for.

The material is resistant to knife scratches and most stains, especially when cleaned quickly. Quartz is also heat-resistant but can still scorch under extreme heat. Soap and water is best for cleaning quartz, as abrasives may cause surface damage.

You can choose from a wide range of quartz countertop options from many of the top industry brands, including Silestone, Caesarstone, and more. Because quartz countertops are manufactured, they can be made with many different pattern and color options to suit your style.

With one-of-a-kind beauty and durability, granite is one of the most popular options for kitchen countertops. This natural stone is durable, making it great for a high-traffic environment like the kitchen. Granite countertops are scratch-resistant and won't crack or burn when exposed to extreme heat, allowing you to move a hot pan straight from the stove to the counter—no trivet needed.

We recommend using cleaners specifically formulated for natural stone to clean granite countertops. Look for products that are pH-balanced and do not contain ammonia.

Solid surface countertops are affordably priced compared to other countertop options.

Typically, this man-made material is constructed from an acrylic resin. Solid surface kitchen counters aren’t as durable as natural stone, so they can melt if you set a hot pan directly on the surface, and they’re also easier to scratch. Most scratches and chips on a solid surface countertop can be repaired by a professional to be virtually imperceptible.

Solid surface countertops can also be manufactured with an integrated sink, making seams virtually imperceptible and creating a smooth flow from countertop to sink, with no seams to catch crumbs.

Natural stone such as marble or quartzite are popular choices for kitchen countertops, thanks to their beauty.

Quartzite is durable and scratch-resistant because it is not very porous, which also makes it more stain resistant. Marble is not scratch-resistant and is very porous and susceptible to staining, so special care is needed.

Stone countertops vary in how much moisture they allow in, so some natural stones need to be sealed periodically, while others do not. We’re happy to advise you on this and answer your maintenance questions. Keep in mind that harsh cleaning products can damage porous materials.

Ultra durable surface countertops are among the newest and most innovative countertop materials on the market, made of a blend of the same raw materials found in quartz, porcelain and glass.

Ultra durable countertops are durable like natural stone under heavy use. This type of material is scratch-resistant, heat-resistant and stain-resistant. It’s even safe under especially cold temperatures and when exposed to UV rays for a prolonged period. However, it is not as impact-resistant as granite or quartz.

Ultra durable countertops are at the top of the typical countertop price range.

Soapstone countertops, another natural stone material, are a beautiful mid-priced option for kitchen counters.

Soapstone differs from other natural stone materials, as it doesn’t come in as wide a range of colors and is not as durable as the others. Although the surface scratches easily, most minor scratches are easy to smooth out with a bit of sandpaper. We recommend coating the area with mineral oil after treating scratches to restore luster and shine.

Soapstone slabs are highly resistant to heat and typically won't sustain damage from chemical cleaning products. Be sure to clean up any spills or food residue quickly, though, as soapstone is prone to staining. 

Laminate countertops are generally the most affordable because laminate is manufactured from layers of kraft paper held together with resin and a top layer of decorative paper.

Laminate is fairly stain resistant, but keep in mind that it’s susceptible to scratching. It’s best not to cut directly on the countertop or use abrasive cleaning products, and we recommend using a trivet for hot pans to protect laminate countertops from intense heat.

If you’re looking for a unique counter color, laminate is a good start. Because the material is man-made, you'll find a broader spectrum of colors than you would with natural materials. Wilsonart and Formica, two of the top laminate brands, have fantastic options for customizing your kitchen countertops.
