Laundry How-To Guides
Washers & Dryers Designed for Your Household

Get your clothes clean and fresh with a new washer and dryer from The Home Depot. Shop our vast selection of laundry appliances designed to fit your lifestyle, space and budget. From energy-efficient front load washers and dryers to large-capacity top-loading washing machines and even compact washers and dryers – we have what you need to get your laundry done conveniently and efficiently.

Choosing the Right Washer and Dryer

Washers and dryers are big investments, so make sure you do your research and choose what works for you and your family. Before you decide, think about your laundry habits. Consider the size of your laundry loads, how often you wash, the type of fabrics you’re washing and the soil level. If you tend to wash large loads, think about getting a large-capacity washer and a large-capacity dryer. Like the name implies, heavy duty washing machines can accommodate heavy-duty loads and bulky items like comforters and heavy towels.

Space is another consideration. Stackable washers and dryers or apartment washers and dryers are perfect for those tight spaces. All-in-one washer dryers provide another space-saving solution. These washer and dryer combos and laundry centers give you the functionality of a washer and dryer, but only take up the space of one appliance.

Choose a sleek front load washer or traditional top load washing machine. Your top-loading washer may have an agitator or an impeller. Front-loading washers use impeller technology.

Lighten Your Laundry Load with Top Features

Today’s washers and dryers are designed with busy people in mind. Convenient features help make laundry day stress free. Most washing machines feature multiple wash cycles to handle everything from your delicate intimates to the kids’ dirty sports uniforms to king-sized comforters. Quick wash cycles allow you to wash a small load in just minutes. Load-sensing features automatically adjust water levels according to the size of your laundry load. That way you’re not wasting water. Look for laundry appliances that produce less noise and vibration (and won’t shake the entire house). Some front load washers feature a “second chance” door that allows you to toss in items you may have forgotten, even after the wash cycle has begun. If your budget allows, opt for the steam feature. Steam washers use steam to penetrate fabric and remove stubborn stains. Steam dryers knock out wrinkles and refresh those items that can’t be put in the wash. Your dryer may have a moisture sensor which will stop clothes when they’re dry and extend drying time, when needed. The extended tumbling option occasionally turns the clothes after they’re dry, so they don’t become wrinkled.

Some new smart washers and dryers come with WiFi capability and are app controlled. This functionality allows you to start a load of laundry even when you’re not at home and get alerts when the laundry cycle is complete. Some brands of washers and dryers even pair with your smart home system.

Before You Buy a New Washer & Dryer

Before you buy your new washer and dryer, make sure to properly measure the width, depth and height of your current machine. Leave at least an inch on either side of the washer and dryer for proper circulation. You’ll need about 6 inches of clearance behind your laundry appliances to account for drainage and the vents. Check to ensure you have the proper outlets and water hookups and a vent for your dryer. Your home’s current setup will help you determine whether you choose a gas dryer or an electric dryer.

Get Your Washer and Dryer Set Delivered and Installed

Laundry days may not be Taco Tuesdays, but you can still make them worry-free and hassle-free with a new washer & dryer. Buy them separately or consider a laundry pair. Washer and dryer sets don’t just look good. They’re made to work together, which can make the laundry chores easier and more convenient for you. At The Home Depot, you’ll find all the top appliance brands with the latest features. Don’t forget about your laundry room accessories including washer and dryer pedestals and washer and dryer stacking kits. You may also need new hoses, vent kits or a power cord for your electric dryer.
