Dryer Lifespan

A clothes dryer usually lasts 10 to 15 years. If you keep up with the maintenance of worn dryer parts and clean the lint traps every time, you may get a longer lifespan. Gas dryers typically last longer than electric ones. However, with the leaps in technology and improvements in energy use, you might want to replace your old dryer with a newer model anyway.

Gas Dryers Vs Electric Dryers

Start by determining which type will fit in your laundry room. Unless you’re moving into a new construction or flipping a house, you probably won’t be able to choose whether you’d like a gas or electric dryer. The choice will have been made for you by the setup of your home’s utilities. You can find both 120-volt dryers and 240-volt dryers in gas or electric, along with other less common voltages.

• Electric laundry dryers have a 4- or 3-prong dryer plug that fits into a large 3-prong or 4-prong outlet that doesn’t look like a standard outlet. If you have an electric stove, you’ll likely need a 240-volt electric dryer, too. The exception is portable clothes dryers, which are 120 volts or less.
• Gas dryers often need a regular 3-prong electrical outlet for 120 volts, but you can find 240-volt gas dryers. If you have a gas range or stove, you're likely cleared to get a gas laundry dryer.

If you can choose between a gas or electric dryer, keep these facts in mind. Gas dryers often dry more efficiently, but they can cost more upfront. When you're adding gas utilities because they're not currently available, it'll cost more. Electric dryers work almost anywhere, but they’re more expensive to run, as electricity tends to cost more than natural gas.

Vented vs Ventless Dryers

You’ll find vented dryers in both gas and electric versions. Vented dryers are the norm, and they vent into the silver accordion tube, through the ductwork, and out of your house. However, electric ventless dryers, which are common in all-in-one laundry units, use a condenser or heat pump to get rid of the moisture and then recycle the air in your dryer. Convertible vent dryers let you choose which configuration you’d prefer.
