Mattresses

Comfort is king when it comes to choosing a bedroom mattress. To make sure you select the best new mattress for your needs, consider its fill material, firmness, special features and size.

Mattress Materials

A good mattress set should support your body and relieve pressure as you sleep. Here are the main two mattress types to consider:

• Foam. This dense material provides a high level of support. Memory foam mattresses contour to your body. This makes them ideal for relieving pressure from your spine and joints while you sleep.

• Innerspring. These more common latex mattresses with spring coils offer the “bounce” you may be used to. Their design allows for maximum airflow, so you can stay cool while you sleep. An innerspring mattress also gives you a range of firmness options to choose from, including soft, medium and firm.

Mattress Features

Pillowtop mattresses, available in both innerspring and foam models, provide a plush, cushiony surface for added comfort. This choice is ideal for people who need firm support but prefer a soft sleeping area.

For added plushness you can add an extra mattress topper. Memory foam mattress toppers provide the contouring feel of a memory foam bed without the cost of an entire mattress.

To complete your mattress set, you’ll need a sturdy base, such as a box spring and bed frame. You could also choose an alternative to a box spring, like a stylish platform bed. Add a mattress cover and cotton bedding for the ultimate night’s sleep.

Mattress Size

The size of your mattress and box spring will depend on your room size, sleeping habits and the size of the person or people sleeping in it.

If you have a queen mattress but still often wake up feeling cramped, crowded or on the edge of the bed, you may want to upgrade to a king-size mattress and box spring (a great option for couples). If your younger sleeper is starting to outgrow a twin mattress and box spring set, a full-size mattress could be the better choice.

You’ll want to check out mattresses for sale in person before you buy to determine which fill, firmness and size seem best for you to enjoy a good night’s sleep.
