Tension Rods Let You Hang Curtains Without a Drill

Hang curtains with a tension curtain rod and get the beauty of traditional curtains without the hassle. You don’t need a drill, special curtain hardware, or tools to hang tension rods. Just let the expansive springing action, or tension, hold the curtain rod in place and hang your curtains. From clean white tension rods to classic black tension rods to shiny or oil-rubbed bronze tension rods, we’ve got what you need.

Personalize a Space But Leave No Trace

Tension rods are a type of damage-free decor that's perfect for apartments or dorms. These inside-mount tension curtain rods offer change without commitment. Many tension rods have rubber caps on the ends to protect the walls, while others have a more decorative flat finial. Take care that the rods don't stick to the paint on the walls.

The nature of tension rods is that, by definition, they’re all no-drill curtain rods that are spring-loaded. They function as removable inside-mount curtain rods to hang sheer curtains, drapes, or blackout curtains. They also make excellent room dividers. Add a curtain and a tension rod to a bedroom, giving siblings or roommates their own space while adding an individualized touch.

Find the Right Size Tension Rod

When you’re searching for the correct tension curtain rod length, make sure it’s at least a few inches bigger than the span of your window well or walls. Adjustable tension rods are telescoping to cover more ground. The tension curtain rod must be slightly longer than the space it spans. That way, the compressed spring in the rod can expand and hold it up. We’ve got short tension rods up to 48 inches long, as well as longer widths.

Adjust a tension rod so it’s 1–1.5 inches longer than the gap, compress it to fit in place, then let it expand. If the rod is a foot or more longer than your space, see if you can size down to a shorter tension rod or shorten it with the telescoping feature. Tension rods with a .5–1-inch diameter work for many standard curtains.

Heavy-Duty Tension Curtain Rods

Although tension rods aren’t always marked as heavy-duty, rods with a larger diameter are more durable and can support more weight without bowing. Go with at least 1-inch diameter tension rods if you’re hanging blackout curtains or heavy drapes. Shower curtain tension rods are typically more heavy-duty, but check that the bar diameter fits your curtain rod pockets. If not, use curtain rings and clips.

Before you buy a tension rod, check its weight capacity. The rod must support more than the curtain’s weight. For example, one rod can hold up to 15 lbs, but another one might only support 7 lbs. Always check the description to ensure the tension curtain rod meets your needs.

Alternative Uses of Tension Rods

Although the most obvious use of tension rods is for window curtains or shower curtains, there are other applications. A tension rod with a .5-inch diameter or less is great for uses that don’t place much weight on the bar. Use a short tension rod in a bathroom cabinet to hang cleaning supplies and spray bottles. Separate cookie sheets, lids, or other kitchen utensils with short tension rods strung across a cabinet’s interior. Add one in a closet, parallel to a shelf, to hook high-heeled shoes in place as you organize them. Place a tension rod in a doorway to have a curtain divider instead of a door.

Some people like tension rods for outdoor use. If you’re using them outside, make sure the rods have a protective coating and aren’t bare metal or steel. Otherwise, they may rust over time as they’re weathered by the elements.
