Lately, I’ve been itching to make some changes to our dining room. It started with a search for new dining chairs, then quickly turned into me rethinking how we use our space.
Most nights we sit down as a family to eat dinner around the table and chat about our day. I would love to swap out our older chairs for something that better complements my style and brightens up the room. I am so grateful to partner with The Home Depot on my room refresh.
The inspiration for the room comes from my love of neutral colors layered in with black, white and natural wood tones. While I would still be using most of my existing furniture, I’m excited to share how a few updates can change the feel of the room.
The Before
Before, I loved the freedom to mix and match our chairs. The two different styles worked well together, creating a casual and relaxed aesthetic.
Currently, I’m craving a more sophisticated look. With so many options, something attractive that can be easily cleaned made the most sense.

Selecting New Chairs
The Home Depot has a wide selection of dining room chairs to fit any home. I browsed a wide variety of styles before ultimately choosing a set.
The Safavieh Riley chairs fit perfectly with my existing table. I love the cohesive feel! They were easy to put together and are well made.
Though the chairs are available in assorted colors, including natural wood finish, raspberry and white, I chose black chairs. I love the contrast of the wood table with the black chairs.
Updated Lighting
In addition to chairs, we wanted to update the lighting for a new look. We swapped out the old light for a simple fixture that I love. We have lower ceilings, so the Duncan flush mount works great for the size of our space.
I love the timeless appeal of black window frames and decided to paint the sliding glass door to get the look.
Then I gathered my supplies – KILZ brand primer, black paint, a paintbrush and painter’s tape.
I chose Glidden black paint in a satin finish. Living with three dogs that go in and out of the door repeatedly, I needed a sheen that is washable.
Painting the door frame made a huge difference. Black paint enhances the view of the door and draws your eyes up, also making the ceiling appear a bit taller.
The room opens up to the living room, so I also painted that window.
Fresh greenery livens the space. To help make the dining room feel brighter, I visited the garden center at The Home Depot to purchase plants. I was instantly drawn to the leaves of the Pilea peperomioides plant.
This view makes me so happy! A simple refresh can bring new life to existing furniture.
