Diwali, also known as the festival of lights, is an Indian festival celebrated by Hindus, Jains and Sikhs across the world to celebrate the triumph of good over evil, light over darkness and wisdom over ignorance. While Diwali is a time for religious rituals and traditional values, it’s also an opportunity to decorate the home, buy new clothes, exchange gifts, and enjoy festivities and feasting with friends and family.
Any Diwali celebration is incomplete without decorating the house in various colors and lighting up lots of mini lamps (diyas) and lanterns. Here’s how you can create a colorful lantern to light up your home this Diwali.
Gather Your Supplies
You will need six mason jars, acrylic paints, dimensional paint (silver or golden), foam brush, a circular wooden board (12 in), beading or craft wire and string lights.
Step One: Paint Mason Jars
Use acrylic paint and foam brushes to paint mason jars in different colors and let them dry. Apply only one coat so that the jars are slightly transparent upon drying for the light to flow through.
Step Two: Decorate with Dimensional Paint
Use dimensional glue or puff paint to make intricate patterns on the jars.
Preferably use silver or gold paint to draw the patterns.
Patterns can be same or different on each jar.
Step Three: Create hangers
Use metal or other craft wires to create hangers for the jars.
Wires should be strong enough to hold the weight of the glass jars.
Step Four: Create the Top Hanging Pedestal
Take a 12” wooden board and drill six equidistant holes in it.
Paint the board with an acrylic paint of your choice - choose a bright and vibrant color for best effect.
Create a pattern similar to the jars with dimensional paint and let it dry.
Step Five: Attach Mason Jars to the Board
Hang mason jars to the wooden board with the help of metal or craft wires.
You may choose to hang the jars at the same height or create a flowing look by hanging them at varying heights.
Step Six: Add Main Anchor
Finally attach a ribbon where the mason jar wires meet in the middle to create the main hanger.
Add string lights in the jars to finish.
