Flowers and Hanging Baskets
I love flowers, and I always look forward to early spring when I can go pick out my new hanging baskets! It makes me so happy to add that splash of spring color to our patio decor. They require a bit more maintenance than the rest of the yard, but the long-blooming annuals are well worth the effort! My husband surprised me with a couple from a local nursery, and I picked up the rest of our hanging baskets from The Home Depot.
I had a hard time choosing because there were so many gorgeous types and colors! In the end, I mostly stayed within the purple, lavender, white, pink palette for a very calming and relaxing space. I did also add a pop of red with this VIVA! hanging basket.
Last year, as part of the Patio Style Challenge, we built this privacy screen/garden lattice to grow vines and create a more intimate and inviting space. My vines are growing pretty well already this year, and I am thrilled to see how big they will be by the end of the summer!
I decided to extend the planter a little further and surround the vines with beautiful perennials that I also grabbed at The Home Depot. I picked mostly violas, pincushions, Delphiniums, and hostas. My sweet friend, Jory helped me plant this year and we both thought these white Vigoro Delphiniums were so pretty.
I also added perennials to the planter on the opposite side of the yard to really frame the whole area. This purple Butterfly Bush is, by far, our favorite! It really does attract so many butterflies, and my three-year-old spends hours watching them. Plus, I freshened up all of the planter beds with newmulch. I just poured it over last year’s so I didn’t need very much. It adds so much crispness to the yard and makes the flowers pop.
The Patio Decor
I refinished some old patio furniture for last year’s Patio Style Challenge, and it is still going strong! I changed up a few things on the patio, but mostly focused on refinishing these pretty wooden umbrellas. I will be sharing a tutorial for this on my blog soon, but needless to say, they went from being completely worn out to gorgeous!
On the patio, I like to use a mix of different types of stands and containers for my plants. A vintage birdcage, an old basket, vintage stools, and a few old plant holders all create an eclectic, mix adding layers of texture and visual interest.
I also repurposed my DIY chalkboard from last year by hanging it on the fence. I think this will be a lot of fun this summer for writing menus, quotes, kids’ drawings and more.
We spend so much time in the backyard in the summer, eating, playing, gardening, and even lying with the babies on the grass looking at the stars.
It is important to us to create an inviting and cozy space to make special memories as a family. We are so excited for whatever this summer on our patio brings.
