What planting zone am I in?
Check the USDA plant hardiness zone map, as planting zones have changed slightly over the years. Zones with bigger numbers can begin planting earlier in the year. Increase your chances of successful gardening by choosing plants that are meant for your zone.
Is it expensive to get mulch delivered?
This year, enjoy free mulch delivery from our stores when you hit a purchase threshold. Our associates partner with a third-party, delivering your mulch in a vehicle that matches your project needs. Small orders arrive via car for a $3 fee, medium orders utilize our vans at a $35 fee, and large orders will ship to you via box truck or flatbed truck at a $79 fee.
Can I get my mulch order loaded into my truck?
Yes, you can pick up your mulch in your own vehicle. Even better, we're happy to help if you need it. After you buy mulch in-store or online with store pickup, go to the mulch loading zone or drive-thru if your store has one. An Orange Apron will load a small or medium mulch order into your truck or SUV. For very large orders of bagged mulch or bulk mulch, you'll likely want delivery.
How can I get small batches of mulch delivered?
If you have a small bagged mulch order, you can get it delivered to your door via a store-fulfilled local delivery service that uses third-party drivers. Your mulch will arrive in a standard car or van for just a $3 delivery fee. Loose mulch orders, also called bulk or yard mulch, will come in a truck. If you order a specific number of bags, you may qualify for free delivery. That threshold varies from store to store, but you'll be able to verify the cost at checkout.
What size mulch order gets flatbed delivery?
When you're ordering huge quantities of bulk mulch or pallets of bagged mulch, you'll get flatbed or box truck delivery. Normally, these are landscapers, Pro customers, or serious DIYers undertaking a major landscaping project. There's a minimum pallet order to maximize resources and usually a delivery fee. Orders that pass a threshold may qualify for free delivery.
What do I do about all these weeds?
Weeds might start peeking through in the garden beds, even if you put down a landscape liner fabric or mulch to keep them at bay. Be sure to get them before they go to seed. Pull weeds from the root in edible flower or vegetable gardens, and dig up the roots if the weed snaps off without them. If you choose to treat weeds with weed killer, find one that's safe for bees, other pollinators, and pets — and wear a respirator and durable rubber gloves to ensure that it doesn't irritate your lungs or skin.
Is it possible to revive a sunburned lawn?
The solution for how to get burnt grass green again is easy: Fix the scorched spot with a good long drink. Continue to water it regularly. It should perk up by the following week. The method for treating grass damaged by dog urine isn't as straightforward. Grass damaged by pets must be removed, neutralized, and replanted in fresh soil with new grass seed, sod, or patch and repair grass seed.
When should I water my lawn and garden?
If you can water at least once a day, during the early morning or in the evening, that's ideal. When it's the height of summer, twice is better. Watering during the heat of the day means a great deal of the moisture will evaporate. This applies to whatever you're growing: plants, veggies, trees, and grass. Whenever you water, give all the plants a thorough drink, and don't skip it just because it's not the best time. The plants still need hydration, regardless of the time on the clock. Depending on your grass type, lawn health, and climate, you may also want to look into applying a lawn fertilizer.
Should I fertilize my flower garden?
Once you've gotten your plants into the soil, make sure they stay well-fed and hydrated. Choose an organic or synthetic fertilizer that fits your needs and gives your garden a boost. You can even find one intended for your plants, whether you need a vegetable fertilizer, fruit tree fertilizer, succulent plant food, or a general garden fertilizer. Only apply as often as recommended on the packaging. Always water immediately after, as directed. That way, the plants won't be burned by the fertilizer.
How can I keep cool this summer?
When you need a break from working in the yard, shelter beneath a patio umbrella or a covered gazebo. If you have sturdy structures like a shed, make your own shade by attaching awnings and shade sails. However, sometimes shade isn't enough because it's just too humid out. That's when a patio mister or misting fan can help cool the air and turn a stifling afternoon into a refreshingly relaxing day. Return to lounging in the sun when that chilled air is ready.
How do I create an outdoor oasis for entertaining?
Spending time with friends in gorgeous summertime weather makes the season even more special. But you don't need to do a full patio makeover or create your own patio furniture collection from scratch to do it. Even a tiny backyard refresh can make a huge difference. A new outdoor rug, outdoor lounge furniture, or even a string of outdoor lights can bring character to an outdoor space.

Celebrate Summertime Gardening
As summer stretches on, your garden and landscaping will weather more heat and sun than earlier in the year. That means you'll need to consider how to keep things cool with proper tending and irrigation. Just like we can get sunburned, plants can dry out, grass can get scorched, and trees can lose their leaves prematurely. We've got advice to help you, your lawn, and your garden sail through the hotter months with flying colors.
Lawn Repair and Patching
Scorched, or burnt, grass has a distinctively shaped discoloration that looks yellow. It happens when plastic or metal sits on the grass and bakes in the sunlight, or a reflective surface shines continuously on your lawn. You'll discover it once you move something sitting out in the yard, like a garden hose. Mirrors or car windows can also scorch grass when the sun angle is just right.
Water burnt grass well and wait a week or so. You should see the signs of life returning by then. If it requires neutralizing after urine damage, you'll have to use patch and repair seed to fix it up or replace the grass.
Whether you’re doing upkeep on your current lawn or patching the bare spots, keep in mind which type of grass it is and tailor your lawn care to it. Match the grass type to how much sun your lawn gets — or to the existing grass type if you're doing patch repair. For example, if trees or buildings shade your lawn so it gets dappled sun or partial shade, make sure you plant sun or shade grass or part sun grass that's not meant for full sun.
Care for Your Trees and Shrubs
When you're ensuring your garden is watered, don't forget about the shrubs and trees. They may need less watering than summer flowers or vegetable plants, but they can still get dry and parched in the summer heat. It's easy to learn how to water trees and shrubs — just make sure you aim the water at the roots. It'll help prolong the greenery and keep it from turning brown or yellow. Also, check for damage on the trees and shrubs. Pests can wreak havoc on your greenery if you don't catch them in time.
Look for leaves full of holes, spots on bark or leaves, or strange raised scars on the bark. When your leaves look like lace, something is eating them. Spots may indicate a number of issues ranging from fungus to bugs. Those scar-like lines on tree bark could mean your tree is infected with borers, which are insects that lay eggs inside the bark and then burrow out after they hatch. Any of these issues should be researched and cared for as soon as possible, as a severe case may kill all or part of your tree.
Grow Your Own Herbs
Get fresh flavors to accent your homegrown produce and spice up your mealtimes when you add herbs. They're generally low-maintenance. It's easy to learn how to grow herbs indoors, but you can raise them outside, too. If you grow herbs outdoors, stick to heat-loving herbs that'll thrive in the summer temperatures, and consider a hanging herb garden. Check out our herb gardening guide for beginners for details.
Planting herbs in the ground can be tricky, as many of them — especially mint — are invasive and will take over your lawn. Avoid a yard of volunteer herbs when you just keep them in decorative plant pots on a porch, window sill, or even in wall planters. Herbs also work as a hydroponic garden, which means they don't grow in soil. Instead, they grow in a mixture of rock chips, perlite, or sand.
Trees as Natural Shade
Trees are the ultimate natural source of shade, and they can change the look of your yard. Whether you plant an accent tree or a small forest, keep in mind this is a long-term commitment. When they're healthy, trees live many decades — and some for hundreds of years. Before you shop, plan so you know how to plant a tree — whether they're deciduous tree saplings, evergreens, or more mature trees.
A backyard forest can be the stuff of dreams, but research what you're planting beforehand. Consider how deep the taproots go, the full-grown size of the trees you want, and how far the root ball extends outward. Trees will always find the easiest source of water, so be sure to plant them away from your water pipes to avoid roots growing into them. Leave a safe distance from your home, as large trees can catch the wind if not properly pruned.
If you've diligently planned, found trees you love, and know the perfect places to put them, get planting. That way, you can enjoy natural shade and the soothing sound of leaves rustling in the breeze as soon as possible.
