Frequently Asked Questions about Rentals

How do I rent tools and trucks?

Stop by the Rental Center at your nearest Home Depot to see what's available. If you want to be sure of what's in stock, call first to inquire about a tool or truck. You may also visit our tool rental or truck rental pages to see if what you need is offered at your store. For more details on renting tools, read our Tool Rental FAQs, which includes equipment terms and conditions.

Can I rent a tool by the hour?

Tool rentals start at four hour time slots. It depends on how long you'd like to rent them. Small home improvement projects may only require a rental that's a few hours long, and we can accommodate large projects as well. You've got options to rent tools by the month, day, or week, too. If you need it longer than your initial rental period, call the Rental Center for an extension and avoid late fees.

When do I return the tools?

You're welcome to return the tools early if you finish your project sooner than predicted, but on-time works, too. As long as you return it by the deadline you were given when you rented it, you'll be good to go. Please clean off any grime and dust from the tool as well. If you need them longer, call the rental center to see if you can extend your rental period.

Can I choose how long to rent a truck?

Rent a truck or moving van for as long as you need it. For short trips, 75 minutes may be enough time. Otherwise, consider renting it by the week or the day, depending on how long your project is. Don't forget to factor in the drive to and from the store, as you'll need to bring it back to the same store you rented it from. Penske moving truck rentals allow one-way rentals as well as round-trip options, and they have different terms. Make sure to read the contract before choosing a truck.

Do I need to refuel the rental truck when I'm done?

Yes, please fill up the truck before you bring it back. Note the amount of gas in the tank when you receive the truck, and be sure to fill it with enough gas to match that level. If you don't, you'll be hit with a penalty known as the fuel replacement charge.

Do I just need a driver's license to rent a truck?

No, you must hold a valid driver's license and be over the age of 21. Depending on your state, you might require car insurance, as well as a credit card hold or a deposit, too. We don't accept cash for Home Depot truck rentals, so please bring your credit card. Penske moving truck rentals have different requirements, so read those if you plan to rent a Penske truck.
