Answer This Question

A:  Currently we would be out of season, so the stores probably do not have it. But you can place a special order on homedepot.com and they will send us the order to process.

A:  My store (New Mexico) had several on hand.

Q:What I have learned in the past is that a bearing is to freely spin between two surfaces , not true since I cut one of these open and found out that the oil cap is so that a pad of absorbing material can get soaked and in turn cool down the copper bushing from over heating when the shaft turns in side of it. There is no bearings or free moving parts just a tightly pressed copper sleeve and a pillow shaped cantankerous to hold the pad inside. So my question is why? Why call it a bearing when in fact there is nothing free moving,And why not build a true bushing with bearings that will not allow the shaft going through the cage to over heat and weld it self to the stiff positioned copper bushing?

    Answer This Question

A:  Dial has found that less moving parts means less chance of failure. In a cooler application, the pillow block bearings' performance is more than sufficient for the shaft to spin freely in the porous brass ring. To ensure proper performance, the oil reservoir will need to be filled and re-filled.

I was disappointed that I was unable to find a sales associate to assist in myselection of evaorative cooler bearings. Since I was unassisted, I picked up the correct size, but with the wrong "race" that goes around the bearing to cushion and hold it in place. I am uncertain if that is a perfecty correct name and description, but hope you understand. It is always disappointing to have to guess at a do-it-yourself home center. I used to be able to ask questions of someone who USUALLY had more info than I on whatever product for which I was searching.

This 1” Dial evaporative cooler bearing replaces the 15 year old original bearing in my Brisa 4000 CFM evaporative cooler. In my area, it seems that most cooler fans use a 3/4-inch shaft Home Depot was the only big box store to carry the 1-inch. Similarly it seems that many bearings are pre-mounted in a dedicated housing; this bearing is a standalone bearing that mounts in the units “housing assembly” or spider framework. By way of anticipation, I replaced both bearings whose process is pretty straight forward. Generally, one will need a wheel puller if one is replacing the blower pulley-side bearing only. While that is not that much of a chore, in the past, I found that putting the pulley back on the shaft was difficult (very tight and not wanting to slide onto the shaft - which is why a wheel puller is needed to remove it). In this instance, I readily removed the shaft by leaving the pulley on and pulling the shaft from the blower wheel from the blower pulley side. Then, remove and install the new bearing in the spider frame (no tools required), slide the shaft into the blower. On the other side, it is easier to proceed by removing the spider from the cooler housing, replace the beating In the spider, and then FIRST slide the bearing/spider onto the shaft and then reattach the spider to the housing. It is difficult for one person to leave the spider/bearing attached to the housing and raise the heavy blower and align the shaft with the bearing opening and then push/pull the shaft through the bearing. When all is said and done, the bearing fit perfectly, and the cooler runs quietly and efficiently. I feel fortunate (and thankful) that Home Depot carries this particular bearing for my 15 year old cooler. If one needs a 1-inch, stand-alone bearing, I strongly recommend this one.
