About This Product

Pressure-Treated Pine meets the highest grading standards for strength and appearance. This double treated Ground Contact lumber must be used for applications where treated lumber is difficult to maintain, repair or replace. Treated lumber is critical to the performance and safety of an entire system or construction such as deck joists, beams and ledger boards. An additional benefit of treated lumber is its defense against rot and insect infestation for its vast majority of applications. Southern yellow pine is responsibly manufactured, safe, and environmentally friendly when used as directed.Treated wood is typically still wet when it's delivered to The Home Depot or job site. As it dries, you should expect slight changes in width and length. As lumber dries, it may split, cup and warp. This is more likely to occur to occur in lower-grade boards, where knots and uneven grains are already present. Each piece of lumber is unique and carries physical characteristics that may include the following: knots, warping, shrinkage, swelling and/or splitting.

Questions & Answers

How long does it take to dry almost completely? I found one that seemed dry to touch and lighter than others but failed the droplet test as beads formed on the surface. It did show a visible water stain when i rubbed it than the other wet to touch ones.

Answer This Question

AshG, the duration for wood to dry varies based on the climate and the amount of sunlight it receives. In the summer, pressure-treated lumber exposed to direct sunlight can dry out within a few days. In cool and damp conditions or when shaded, the drying process will be significantly prolonged.

Is newly treated, still wet pressure treated wood ok to build with right away? I am building several raised beds and a bench/planter. I am worried about it warping as it dries, ruining the project.

Sg424, We would recommend letting the lumber dry before using on your project as pressure-treated products tend to shrink some as the lumber dries out.

do you have a pattern for cutting stringers ? from 2x10 by 8 ft

Deetlebomb, We checked around and do not seem to have a product like that. Of course, the manufacturing facilities have machines that do that. If you are not interested in making a special order - call one of the PRO associates at Home Depot to see if this is possible, we would suggest hiring a local builder who is familiar with the code requirements for making a stringer that would be approved in your county/municipality, etc.

Can this wood be used for building edible raised garden beds?

the new laws that were put into place about 15 years ago allows people to use this wood in raised boxes. They took out the bad as stated by another person. December 31, 2003, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) banned the sale of lumber treated with chromated copper arsenate (CCA) for residential use.

I have seen this recommended by pros on the Today Show. They say the chemicals in the lumber (that prevent rot) don't get into your veggies. Still, I think I would eat the crops near the middle of the box first.

No. Most pressure treated lumber contains arsenic, or a compound thereof. You can't use it as firewood either - the smoke is toxic. It's also a good idea to use a dust mask when cutting it to keep the dust out of your respiratory system.

Depends on the individual piece of lumber, and how dry it is. I got one 2x8x8 the other day that was light as a feather...it was nice and dry. That is unusual though, Usually they are pretty moist and can be quite heavy. Bring a friend or ask for help from the home depot workers if you are not strong enough.

                      Everything will rot eventually.

It is not water resistant - water can soak in. It is guaranteed against rot because the chemical used to treat the wood (usually an arsenic based compound) prevents the causes of "rot" to happen (fungus, mold, ...).

Yes, it will eventually rot if it's subject to moisture day in and day out. I would say 8 to 10 years if near water all the time.

If above ground, rain eventually washes the saturated chemicals off the surface, and so the microbes that cause wood decay do some damage, most noticeably between the rings at first. If you treat with water repellant regularly (or wood stain like Behr Deck Plus), you'll preserve it indefinitely. The part underground seems to stay nice without any maintenance. I have a lot of decking made out of this stuff and it looks pretty good even after 20 years. I paint it about every five years.

All wood will rot. There is no magic wood...the only thing that won't rot is plastic. Its rot-resistant, but if you place it in constant contact with moisture...believe me, it will rot.

Yes, this lumber is stainable. Before staining, please do the water drop test. Drip a few drops of water onto the wood that you are testing. If the water beads up on the surface of the wood, the moisture content is still too high for the wood to accept a sealant. If the water droplets wick into the board, then it is ready to accept a sealant. If the water beads up on the board, give it some more time for the wood to dry out.

Wait at least a year for the wood to dry...After that no problem..

Yes. Let it dry out for a while when the building is done, then I recommend Behr Deck Plus. Lots of color choices and it holds up for a long time. I have also used oil stains successfully but they can only make it dark.

As you might expect it takes stain best after its been hot and dry and off the lumber pile for a while. I have had years of good service on my porch deck and framing (pressure treated lumber) using Behr Deck Plus. It's more like paint but it really sticks and holds up to traffic and weather.

Used this lumber to rebuild my back steps.. I cut stringers out of the 2x10's and they worked fine. I suggest picking your own lumber so you get pieces that work for your project. There were large knots on most pieces in the stack, but I selected boards I could use where the knots would not affect my build. I also suggest you pre-drill everything to reduce the chance of splitting. I also suggest using the lumber while it's wet, when it's dry it's more prone to splitting. Also, if you leave it out in the sun for days and don't stack it properly you are asking for warps, cracks, and twisted boards. When you buy it, use it. Don't expect the quality to improve by letting it sit around for several weeks. It is a good product.. I'll be buying more in a few weeks to rebuild my front deck...
