Old houses contain 2x4s that are actually 2” by 4”. Then they shrinkflated and started milling them to 3.5”x1.5”. They begin with a rough-milled plank at 2x4 but take it down to final size, straightening it out and such, leaving the actual dimension.
Lumber has a nominal dimension and an actual dimension. The nominal dimension will be something like 1x2 or 2x4. The actual dimension will be smaller than the nominal. In this case 3/4 (roughly) by 1-1/2. It can be confusing but it’s the standard practice
