I received this rug and put it down on a pad about a little less than a week ago. It is balling up/ pilling up horribly. Is this normal?

Here’s what’s happening and how to handle it: Shedding & Pilling: Many new rugs, particularly those made from wool, synthetic blends, or high-pile materials, will naturally shed fibers at first. This can look like “balling up” or pilling. Rug Pad Impact: Using a pad is good—it helps protect your floor and extend the life of the rug—but some fibers may rub against it and create extra loose fibers initially.

I keep reading about a musty smell coming off of the rug in comments. Is this a mold or mildew problem from poor packaging or from being housed in a moldy warehouse? I have mold allergies. I can't risk a moldy item in my house.
I ordered two round 6" rugs- both smell like mold. I have aired it out in the sun for three days- still smells like mold. I'd upload a photo but you can't see the mold - you can only smell it. I'm returning it
Hello! Generally, new Safavieh rugs will emit an odor. This odor is likely caused by the packaging material, dyes, fiber yarns, and or backing. These are all natural odors that are sometimes heightened after the rug has been sealed for shipping and/ or storage. The odor will dissipate within 1 - 2 weeks, after removing from the packaging.
