Can this be welded

This round rod is weldable.

Can I drill a hole through this rod with a regular drill bit?

Answers

If you have a drill press and a drill press vise, you should be able to use a reasonably high quality drill bit to drill a hole it it... I would use cutting oil and go very slow. Take your time with it. Although there is no information about the type of steel this rod is made from, I hardly doubt it is high carbon steel. The rod is too flexible and easy to file, so it should be relatively easy to drill with the right equipment while observing personal safety guidelines.

Maximum weight before it bends? I need it to hold at least 50 lbs.

Answer

This round rod is made from low carbon steel, not alloy steel and is not tested for weight bearing. This rod will flex when holding dead weight. If you are looking for structural support, please consult an engineer for their recommendations about your application.

(What's this)
This is a plain hot-rolled steel rod, most likely close to A36 spec. Measured diameter is .366, which is pretty far off from the spec'd .375 inch. It has a rough pitted surface. It is a basic piece of steel for general use. I would not use it in any project that had any mechanical load requirements. For example it would make a good axle for a small cart, and it's good in a pinch for making quick steel parts. I chucked this up in my lathe to make a small non-critical replacement pin for another machine, and it worked as a functional piece. If you just need a piece of steel rod for a quick project, this will do.

Everbilt 3/8 in. x 36 in. Plain Steel Round Rod These steel rods are easy to work with and thread easy with a normal tap – die set. The rod can be welded as another alternative. Great for projects for the builder of the homeowner at any level of expertise. Go to your local Home Depot and check out the various rods, threaded rods tubing square and round in the hardware section.

(What's this)
This is a really strong steel round rod. I have trepidation just about everything to bend and hold this tree up straight and nothing I have tried has had the strength to hold it up without bending or coming up out of the ground. This rod wend straight in the ground and stayed straight even after staking the tree. It didn’t budge. I’m very pleased with this rod. This tree was transplanted by a gardener and never stood straight. Now it has a chance.

I needed to replace stacking bunk bed pins that somehow got misplaced when we dis-assembled them. This rod was the perfect thickness. I cut to length and we are good to go.
