Cedar Shingles for Garden Shed
I purchased 11 bundles of these shingles for a garden shed that I built this spring. The first 4 bundles I would rate mildly satisfactory but the others purchased were complete junk. Crooked cuts, very rough finish on both sides, and way too many that couldn't be used because they were too small. These are Certigrade 2 shingles made in Canada. I understand they are not R&R perfection shingles but these were far from a grade 2 shingle based on the Cedar Bureau standard. I ended up having to recut all four sides on a table saw and many needed sanding to look acceptable. In addition, the lengths were inconsistent making installation difficult. I would have used a different product but was too far into the project after noticing the change in quality between the bundles I purchased a few weeks earlier.

We bought four bundles, three were good and one was not good. The good ones had a variety of widths, which we want but we learned you need to watch the lengths. One bundle almost all were 18 inches long, the next two bundles almost all the pieces were 16 or 17 inches long, but the last bundle had all narrow pieces and they were 15 inches long and under. We adjusted for the different lengths, but most of the waste pieces were from the last bundle.

I have a small shed project that I am siding a gable end with cedar. The bales looked great from the outside; however, when I opened them there were a number of shingles that were heavily knotted, cracked, too thin or considerably shorter than 16". My estimate is 15% of each bale I sorted out. (I purchased four bales, total.) Otherwise, those that made the cut were good quality.
