Q:I want to add a timer function to the high/low yellow control wires. But I don’t know what the yellow wires do. Do they close a line voltage? Can I close the dual speed(yellow wires) with a Leviton decora+ timer switch?

Q:Can this be installed on a vaulted ceiling? My bathroom has a tall ceiling with walls ranging from 9 feet to 13 feet. I planned on mounting this above the shower (about 12 feet above the floor) but didn't know if the angle would affect the unit's performance. Is an angled installation validated?

Answer This Question

A:  These fans can be installed into a vaulted ceiling given you have enough clearance. It is also important that the fan be facing in a way that allows the backdraft damper to open and close properly.

Q:Does this fan run continuously? Or can it run strictly off the humidity sensor? That is, leave the wall switch on and the fan turns on above a certain humidity level and turns off below a certain humidity level?

    Answer This Question

A:  The fan runs at low speed continuously and when high humidity is detected it switches to high speed.

A:  This fan is designed to run continuous and can be set up at time of installation for the continuous operation. In addition the humidity sensor will kick the fan on at the humidity level that it has been set at. Please see link to instruction manual. We also have 2 videos on our website, one on installation and one on setting the humidistat. www.airkinglimited.com http://www.airkinglimited.com/instructions/EVDIO.pdf

The fan is great. It moves a good amount of air in our 12’x8’ bathroom. It’s very quiet to where you are wondering if it’s actually moving air. But it is! The mirror still fogs, but it doesn’t stay that way for nearly as long. Truth be told I take long and hot showers, and it would be hard for any fan to move that much steam quick enough to not fog. When my kids take showers there is almost no fogging on the mirror. Installation was a little rough (for me). The directions were of little help (in my opinion). So, just FYI: You might need a reducer and ducting tape to connect it to a previous venting hose. Also we had to take off the black nozel or tube (whatever you want to call it) on the side that connects to the duct before you put it in the hole or it won’t fit. Putting that black plastic piece back on in the attic was a pain. It was larger than our last fan so we had to cut a bigger hole in ceiling. I may not have done this correctly but the extenders to connect to the studs (rafters) in the attic, stuck out on the sides far enough to where I had to cut even more drywall so they could make it through the hole. The amount I had to cut was beyond what the plastic cover would hide so after installing fan there was patching, texturing and painting to do. Don’t know if this was user error or product flaw but that was my experience. After it was all said and done, it is a good fan so far. I have had it for 2 months now.

This is a very large exhaust fan with a maximum output of 150 CFM. The title says it's a single speed but it actually has two speeds. It's a little confusing but there are switches inside the fan that you set at the time of installation(but can be changed later) that set the low speed at between 30-60 CFM or 70-120 CFM and the high setting at between 80-150 CFM. Once that is set it you wire it to a double wall switch. One switch controls the light and the other switches the fan from low to high speed. The fan is designed for continuous operation so there is no on/off switch which is disappointing. Only low or high speed. I have figured out a way to wire it with a third switch so that I can turn it off completely. It is as simple to install as any other exhaust fan other than it is heavier than most and does require a 6" duct. The grill looks nice and is quite large at 16 x 17 inches. The light is an 8 watt LED with a GU24 base so if it ever needs replaced I'll probably have to special order it.

I recently completed a new home build and was disappointed with the quality and performance of the bath fan installed in the guest bath. The fan was noisy and didn't do much air extraction. The Air King fan is clearly a much higher quality fan the the builder grade fan. There are a few things to consider when choosing this fan as a retrofit fan. First, it's big, about 13" x 13" square and 10" high. This means you have to make sure it's going to fit in your layout. Next to install this you'll need access to the fan from above, that means if you're planning an installation between floors it's not the best choice. Lastly, this fan is quiet, partly because of the 6" duct, If you've got a 3 or 4" existing duct you'll want to increase the duct size rather that use a reducer. This fan has an adjustment for the air volume which is great. This is a high quality fan!

Though I list the need for a larger vent ductwork, this really is a plus. You just can't replace your existing fan without cutting a larger ceiling opening. And you must replace small 4-inch ducting with larger capacity 6-inch. That was the bad news. But for a quiet fan ( I mean quiet) and to remove a large volume of air (humidity and oders) plus an adjustable speed and humidity sensing unit, install this. I saved this replacement for the cool winter months and it is worth it. I wish I had done this when my three (3) teenage children were still home. The electric box is easily accessed from the side or back. The motor mount unscrews and pivots out for mountiung the metal can (box). A nice trim plate will help hide the drywall. Large plastic vent clips in easily to the trim plate.

This is a very powerful and well-made exhaust fan. It is also very quiet. We like the way they designed the mounting brackets. The brackets slide and adjust in a way that makes installation easy. The brackets are on the side instead of on the top of the housing which makes it so much easier to use and tighten the bracket screws. It has a 6” duct outlet with a backflow protector disc. A normal 6” duct slides easily on to the duct outlet and the further up it goes the tighter it gets. It has a knob inside the housing which adjusts the speed of the motor creating a wide range of CFM flow rates. The housing easily fits into rafters 14” apart. You may make your electrical connection inside the housing or the outside with the convenient hole on the side to feed the wires in when complete. The air grate is made of white plastic and it uses the common slide clip design to attach the grate to the housing then you push it up to secure the grate to the ceiling. We replaced a fan that had a light so there was more electrical work than we were planning in the beginning. We had to add a box for the light and a box to extend the wires from the switches. Fortunately, the old fan was on a double switch, so we just had to find the right wire for the light and the right one for the fan. Probably the hardest part of the whole installation was getting the old fan out.

Air King exhaust fan. So here we have a variable speed with humidity sensor energy efficient unit. First of all this is a very large unit so be sure you have the space to install it. Second it’s a 6” ducting be sure this is the sizing of ducting you are installing or have existing. It’s not recommended to go from 6 to 4 inches as you will increase the noise level and not be able to move the air volume. Over all a nice unit , very quite on its lower setting but it’s level increases through its settings. You are able to set the production levels internally. The install is straight forward for new or existing installation , but again be sure you have the space 10”mimimim ceiling and ducting sizing. Basic wiring on off is easy and the internal humidity switch will increase the motor speed as required , more advanced switches are possible with instructions included but no switch. Build quality is better then average, grill is plain, note the fan squirrel cage is plastic. In my opinion this is a higher skilled DYI project no big deal for a tradesman. Great option for ventilation needs.

This fan has more adjustments than I considered possible. There are five switches that you can adjust after it is installed. It has a humidistat to let you set the “automatic on”, based on humidity. Then it has three timers for the low/medium/high speeds. And there is a switch for the default minimum CFM air speed, basically high or low. It is a well thought out, well built, well sealed, full featured unit. On the install, it has a trim ring that hides the ceiling cut. The fan metal box is about 13” square so a fairly tight fit in a 16” center stud bay (about 14.5” stud to stud). It is larger than the average contractor fan, i.e., the box is bigger, the duct is 6”, it is fairly “tall”, etc. Plan the install carefully. For example, I couldn’t put it as far towards the eave in the attic as I would like, due to the roof slope. My one minor complaint is that the mounting arms’ screw/nail tabs don’t stick out far enough to allow using a drill, hammer or ratchet to tight screws/nails. The mounting rail protrudes and conflicts. You remove the motor to install it so it is fairly light until the motor is installed. You can remove the control units (2), also, to end up with an empty box. I wired it with 12-4 w/ ground NM/Romex wiring, in case I wanted to install a heater/night light/light/fan or some other combo in the future. This unit only needs 12-2 w/ ground. I wire-nutted the spare wires in the fan wiring box. The fan also has a “boost” speed that I think converts it from the standard 130 CFM to 113 CFM with more static pressure (SP), per the label. The fan is very quiet in normal operation and the automation works nicely. It is also very nice looking.

My daughter's condo has a small laundry closet but the electric dryer does not vent outside; when the dryer is running it creates a very high humidity situation which contributes to mold/mildew formation. This exhaust fan has a built in humidity sensor so it can be set to turn on automatically when humidity reaches a certain level and shuts off when humidity drops below the set point. This eliminates the need to manually turn the fan on and off (although we do have a switch so it can be shut off if needed). There are a few other notable features: the fan is very quiet; you'll still hear it if there isn't much other noise around, but much quieter than typical exhaust fans. It also has an adjustable speed setting so you can control how fast it pulls the air out. And finally, it is designed to be completely covered by your attic insulation. You won't end up with a big cold (or hot) spot on your ceiling. In our situation we are unable to create any new openings in the side of the building for the fan exhaust, but we were able to "Y" it in to a nearby bathroom exhaust duct. That somewhat reduces the fan's efficiency because the bathroom duct is just 5" while the exhaust fan is 6". But all things considered, it was a perfect solution and makes a noticeable difference in indoor air quality and comfort. The manual is well written and illustrated, instructions included for both new and existing construction. You will need attic access to install this fan.

This is a big fan!!! Before buying it make sure that you have space to fit it in. If you sure that it fits and still hold doubt – it is awesome fan! It super quite even at 120 CFM (see my video test). I have little to no doubt that motor will serve long (and it comes 5 year warranty). I truly liked that volumetric flowrate is manually adjustable anywhere from 40 to 120 CFMs (you need to reach under the grill to tune it). Finally it comes with almost everything that is required for replacing old fan; I found only not included into box with fan a couple of things - wire conduit and screws for rails (easy to buy if you do not have at home or on old fan). What I would improve (but do not have a good advice to manufacturer how to make it possible): - place RPM dial somewhere on the grill
