        Answer This Question

A:  Hi Diyer, thank you for your question. If your basement has bare concrete floors, they will need to be etched. You can also use a grinder to make the concrete rough and porous. Then, use the Concrete Bonding Primer No. 880 before painting. Good luck with your project! -Giovanna

Black floor needed poly over it
I had an outdated parquet floor in my living room/ dining room.. I was looking for a short term fix so decided to paint the floor black. I chose the black in low lustre… I primed first… and then painted The paint went on great and covered well!! However after waiting the recommended drying time to walk on it… You could see every little mark and smudge… Just from walking with no shoes! Having kids in the house… decided to seal with polycrylic Made all the difference…No more marks :)

            Gloss vs Low Lustre
I started with the gloss beacuse I figured it would be easier to clean. Once it dried though it was very tacky. I figured the only option to get rid of the tackiness was to put a couple coats of polyurethane. Since I was going to be doing that I decided to repaint in low lustre since I like that look better. The low lustre paint did not dry tacky!! It looks so much better than the gloss and I will not need to polyurethane it. Left a star off since I do not know how the paint will wear over time. Although it does appear to be a durable paint!

I have bridge over a waterfall that empties into my pool, the concrete at the top and the stairs are slippery when wet. To the point my wife finally forced me to look into fixing the problem (she uses bridge to get mail). She also suggested non slip treads. Well her ideas turn in to my projects. I met with helpful HD paint specialist and he suggested this Behr Porch and Patio Anti-Slip floor paint, he said was fine for wood and concrete which I wanted to have uniform coloring. He told me to power wash or acid wash the concrete and then to use a bonding primer. And as the bridge was fairly recently coated to just wash the steps. So this quickly became a multi-day project. I applied the primer and it just seamed to disappear. The next day I started applying the paint and even thought the paint is quite thick, is had more streaking that I desired. I returned to the store with a picture, found the same rep I'd talked to, he asked me what time of day I pained and what was the surface temp. Something I'd never considered. Well my concrete in the sun was 145 degrees, I waited till well after sunset, and it was still 115 degrees (Did I mention I live in Arizona, and it was August?). In the morning at 7am the temp was still 92 degrees . The can says to apply when surface and air temp is under 90. It was weeks before it was under 90 degrees (actually just 90). I got up at 6am to start, air temp 89. My re-application was much better but it was obviously going to take at least 2 coats on the concrete. Application on the stair treads also did not cover evenly, but the paint dried to the touch very quickly (<15m, but immediate re-application caused smearing), 2 hrs later it was 99 degrees, so I waited again for a cool morning. I like the flat finish, the black on the concrete looks pretty cool, the black stair treads are still more slippery than desirable (3 coats), the concrete is much improved (if I had a small child they could use it as a chalkboard, I good idea when my grand kids get older). But it took weeks of waiting to do this project, and I'd hoped the paint would cover in a single coat, it did not. I'm not sure the bonder did what was needed given the temp of the concrete when I applied it. Only time will tell if the paint peels or cracks. My wife not impressed with steps, will try another coat later in the fall, I still have extra paint. Will try to report back then. Note: Behr claims 1g will cover 75sq ft on a rough surface, I used a gallon on about about a 66sq ft smooth surface. And I thought it still needed a second coat (about 1/2g needed for the second coat). So my biggest issue was the coverage, on concrete it's fine, although it shows foot prints really well (but my painted area is high enough those can't be seen from below). An regarding the temperature, the Behr can is clearly labeled.

This BEHR brand paint is rated for interior and exterior wooden floors. The manufacturer recommends using their primer to insure lasting performance. The paint is low lustre enamel with a thick textured consistency to make it anti slip. The paint should cover 125 square feet depending on the condition of the wood you are painting. Application temperatures are 50 to 90 degrees and drying time is 2 to 4 hours. I used this paint to paint black bear silhouettes on deck benches and on the stained wooden deck itself. The paint is a thick rich consistency and required little mixing with no separation of materials in the can. The paint went on easily and dried quickly and I liked the no slip texture of the dried paint. The paint was priced at $32.98 a gallon in July 2020, and I am impressed with the quality and dried texture of the finished product and would recommend it. It has added site appeal to our deck benches and our deck itself.

I must say that I was extremely impressed with this Behr Premium textured low-lustre enamel porch and patio anti-slip floor paint. This is a “cover all the bases” paint. The base can be colored to match an existing paint, or you can choose from a wide variety of colors. This paint will work on any concrete or wood and will make that into an anti-slip area with the texturized formula. The only difference is what primer you will need to use, Behr all-in-one wood cleaner or Behr concrete and masonry bonding primer. One gallon will cover approximately 125 sq. ft. using a standard 3/8” nap roller. I have multiple projects going on where I will be using this on wood and concrete. I tested it on a paint mixing strip and found that it covered all the writing on the paint stick with one coating which leads me to believe that the advertised coverage is accurate. I am using the black on my garage floor and I can't wait to see how it turns out.

Prep work is a must! In order for this or any floor/porch paint to last, you must read and follow the manufacturer's recommendations. It is very important that you begin with a clean surface and apply a primer before applying the paint. We chose the wood formula in black for our covered back porch. Even though the deck boards were new, we still pressure washed them and allowed them to dry before priming. Behr states that you can wait to apply topcoat up to 29 days but I applied after the recommended minimum 4 hour drying time. You must prepare for an alternate entrance for 3 days to allow the topcoat/porch paint to dry completely. I like that the paint cleans up so easily with soap and water! The black color contrasts well against our light gray house color with black trim accents. The texture adds anti-slip protection without being too rough for bare feet. Since it hasn't been 30 days since application, I cannot comment on durability or how it holds up against cleaning. Thus far, I'm pleased with the look of the paint on wooden deck boards.

My wife and I love this stuff, obviously we haven't had it long so we can't attest for it's long term durabilities but it's goes on easy just like painting, but thicker and you have to stir more often because of the texture in the paint and you want consistency but that's obvious, the paint is thick so stir gently as to not break the wood stir stick, color is very even, we tested it on some step's just in case we didn't like it, as stated before not sure about it's long term durability so we didn't go all out and definitely not sure about it's long term durability in wood, but we have a concrete floor in our utility room and will be using this stuff.
