Q:I’d like to use this to paint our front door, which is currently a very dark brown. Do I need to apply primer to the door first? Also, should I use some sort of clear sealant afterwards to protect the paint?

Answer This Question

A:  Hi Chris, thank you for your question. Our solid-color wood stain can be used for an exterior front door. It's film-forming and will completely cover the existing color. Priming is unnecessary, but priming with Behr Multi-Surface Primer No. 436 is recommended for woods that bleed. It's also a stand-alone product and does not require a clear sealant to protect the stain. Please feel free to reach out with any additional questions you may have. Have a great day! -Alex

Q:I have a deck that is painted in Behr Porch & Patio low lustre #PFC 63 30 days ago. Will this semi transparent stain #ST 131 adhere to it. I know it's not needed or required. This is just for a final finish aesthetic appearance

A:  Hi ThePenn, thank you for your question. We do not recommend our Semi-Transparent Stain and Sealer over painted surfaces. The Semi-Transparent Stain should only be used on bare wood. Have a great day! -Giovanna

Q:I have a deck that is about 5 years old but was never stained or painted, my local home depot suggested killz primer before applying this product, is that correct? I now have a freshly primed bright white deck and was told a solid stain wont take to it

The product was thicker than expected which was a pleasant surprise.. I used it with a spray gun and had no issues.

          Looked good for 2 weeks
I prepped my fence a week in advance with a cleaning. Applied this stain with a staining pad, 1 coat as advertised and now I am seeing spots of the original fence coming through, more and more everyday. Very disappointed the time I took and the expense of the product to have this occurring in a very short period. At the rate this is happening I’d guess in another month the entire fence will need completely redone.

Hi David, thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear that you are seeing the color of the original fence coming through. As it turns out it is recommended to apply two coats of the Semi-transparent stain. I'd recommend cleaning the surface with our All-In-One Wood cleaner letting it dry thoroughly and applying another coat of stain. Customer satisfaction is important to us, and we appreciate your feedback. Please reach out to us directly if you need further assistance; our customer care team is happy to help you! -Ronald Behr
            Looks great!
Covered our deck really well and looks great. We had a lot of uneven boards with a previous semi-transparent stain and they were also able to color match exactly to our railing color. See before and after photos. I'm not sure how long it will last before peeling and/or needing refinishing but hopefully at least a few years...

This is such a beautiful cedar stain! Looked little orange when applied. But looked more toned down and beautiful once it dried. The white railings and cedar naturaltone combination came out fantastic!

Good Coverage for older deck - Caveat on color
Good coverage for older deck while still semitransparent. Well maintained deck 25+ yrs beginning to show rough horizontal surfaces. Been using prem ST online stain that made PT-wood look like teak or other tropical. Need more coverage now. Didn't want flaking & removing of semi-solid. This ST has more opacity/protection hiding flaws well while letting grain show. Caveat: avoid colors leaning orange. Calif Rustic color we got is ok, but more orange IRL than pics. Browner next time.

This product cost me 70 hours
I’m impressed how a product can both 70 % completely fail and peel off a brand new, sanded cleaned and dried deck in less than a year but also take 50 hours of pressure washing and 20hours of sanding to get it 90% removed. This has been such a bad product I think I have sworn off behr products entirely. Look else where.

Hello, thank you for your review. I'm very sorry to hear about your poor experience with our Semi-Transparent Waterproofing Stain & Sealer. That is not the performance we expect of the product, and certainly not what we want our customers going through. Our Semi-Transparent Waterproofing Stain & Sealer should provide a 6-year lifespan for horizontal surfaces and 8 years for vertical, so I'm concerned that you mentioned it peeled in less than a year. To fix the issue, I recommend removing any leftover stain on the surface with a wood stripper or by sanding. Then, clean the surface with our All-In-One Wood Cleaner to promote even adhesion of the stain. Once clean and dry, apply 2 coats following the recommended spread rate. This is the biggest key for the stain to reach its full lifespan, as an over/under application can cause the coating to fail prematurely. Nonetheless, we want you to be able to achieve positive results, and we'd love to help turn this experience around. Please feel free to reach out to us directly so we can learn more about your project and assist. We look forward to hearing from you! -Lina Behr
                  The perfect color!
After researching extensively for a stain to complement our gray house and gray stamped patio without yellow or red undertones, I chose Behr semi-transparent stain in Boot Hill Gray. Its blend of brown and gray tones was perfect. Easy application, good coverage, and hassle-free cleanup resulted in amazing results. Highly recommend!

I've used Behr Waterproofing Stain and Sealer on my fence since I built it numerous years ago and it has preserved the wood very well. Just refinshed my fence and I shouldn't need to do it again for at least another 6-8 years.
