Not sure how well this would work on a dock. Many folks here seem to only get a year or two out of the product on a deck, so I wouldn't set my hopes too high.

Yes it is quite thick. Needs to be applied with a brush for that reason. When you prep the surface to be painted, and apply it with a brush, it will look nice and last for years.

Can this product be used as a first coat/application on a new deck?

Answer

Hi JJ - Thank you for your question. Our Advanced DeckOver can be used on a new deck. We recommend making sure the wood is clean and completely dry before applying the required 2 coats of DeckOver to ensure the best adhesion (under application may cause the coating to fail prematurely). Best - Sara

Hi Tech49, thanks for writing in with your question. Our Advanced DeckOver can be applied over a previous coating in good condition. So if the previous coating is sound, you can go ahead and apply Advanced DeckOver on top. Be sure to follow the spread rate and apply two coats. Good luck with your project! -Giovanna

Hi srky, Thanks for your question! The Advanced DeckOver can be applied directly on top of other water and oil-based stains in good condition. We recommend cleaning the surface with our All-In-One Wood Cleaner and allowing the surface to completely dry before applying the DeckOver to change the color. Best - Sara

Hello Billgator, Thanks for reaching out. Yes, the Behr Premium Advanced DeckOver can be applied to a concrete surface. To prepare, etch bare concrete and follow by thoroughly rinsing the surface and cleaning. Once the surface is dry, you're ready to apply the new coating. I hope this information helps and good luck with your project. Best, Roxana N.

I doubt it would work in a paint sprayer as it is so thick. In order for it to do the job correctly I would hand brush it on.

How would this work for interior stair threads? Or would the patio and floor series work better?

Peeling off after 6 months
I used Advanced DeckOver in the fall. I prepared the deck well and followed the instructions. At first it was really nice but it did not last. It has been only 6 months and the paint is peeling. My deck will need to be refinished again. I am incredibly disappointed in the quality. It has turned out to be a waste of money, and more importantly a waste of my time. Very Dissatisfied!!

I recommend removing the loose coating, cleaning with the All-In-One Wood Cleaner, and reapplying. Customer satisfaction is important to us, and we appreciate your feedback. -- Behr Deck Paint, 10-19 I used this deck paint over OSB sheets cut for my large utility trailer. The paint came with instructions to not thin which I didn't do at first, so I had to practically trowel it on. Finally I did thin it and it spread much better although it still was extremely thick compared to most paint I've used which should give me lots of water/weather protection. How long it will last--I don't know yet. It dried very hard even in cracks, on lumps, and overlaps. It does dry in only a few hours. The coverage as to filling in the rough surface of the sheets was pretty good. In fact, it kind of filled in a lot of the small channels I thought I'd use for traction, so it's pretty smooth now. It has a certain way of opening the top cover, so be sure to read the instructions on the lid first. --

Do not use this product on new wood without sealing it first. We coated our new deck with this after we made sure the wood was dry. After one winter the Deck Over paint bubbles and cracks. I now have to remove all of it. It's like scraping money off the deck and throwing it in the garbage. We used it because we needed it to match an older deck that had been stained and sealed first before this product was applied. It worked great on that deck and has not bubbled or cracked. It just doesn't work well on new wood. It doesn't penetrate the wood but just sits on top it seems.

Thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear about the bubbling and cracking on your deck after one winter! I used this to redo my front porch, after stripping and cleaning with the recommended products. It turned out perfect! The color looked lighter for the first day or so but got darker as it cured.

It seems appropriate to call this a "coating" because it is definitely not a deck stain and it has unusually high solids for a paint. It is very thick and requires a good bit of stirring even after one day. I used the recommended 1/2 inch roller for the main area and a high quality synthetic bristle brush for the cut in work. It definitely requires two coats to fill in the cracks in treated lumber used for decks. My deck is 20 years old and has been stained a couple of times but sun and the weather had produced numerous cracks in the wood. I don't expect this product to make the deck last another 20 years. I expect it to extend the useful life for several years and then I plan to replace the boards with synthetic decking. The result of 2 coats of the product did make a very big difference as far as amount of cracks that show. Only a couple of the wider ones remain. One technique for applying the product with a roller that I found helpful on treated lumber deck boards was to roll across the grain first in order to force the product into the cracks. Then I finished with long strokes with the grain as you would if you were applying stain. All in all, I found this to be a useful product but I miss that natural look of wood. If I want that I will have to opt for something like new cedar decking and all the maintenance issues that go with it. This is a good way of putting off the high cost of synthetic decking, which is probably somewhere in this deck's future.

Terrible Product!
I read all the reviews beforehand and what I learned was preparation was key. Spring of 2019 I power washed, used a deck cleaner and rented a sander and sanded the whole 16 x 20 deck. 5 days it took from prep to dry. Applied 2 coats and the next spring, it's bubbling up and peeling like old wallpaper. I worked so hard on this deck for this to happen. Will not use any Behr products again and I tell my friends to not use this brand as well. Pictures are attached - Rainy day in Ohio.

Hi Mudda - Thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear about the bubbling and peeling on your deck, especially after the work that went into your project! To fix the finish, I recommend removing the loose DeckOver, cleaning the bare spots with our wood cleaner, then touching up (or applying 2 new coats if this is happening to most of the surface). I've also reached out to you via email to learn more about your project and make this right. Thanks again for taking the time to write a review, and I hope to hear back from you. - Sara
Peeling/Chipping
This deck paint is great until it isn’t. After a year or so, It starts to peel and chip. You wouldn’t think it’s a big deal is kind of a high traffic area so you try to remove it and it’s near impossible. Their response to this is why I am writing this reply. A SANDER WILL NOT WORK TO REMOVE THIS. I’ve tried nearly everything a torch, sander, etc. the only way to get it off is chipping. Super frustrating that they recommend their products to put another coat in areas chipping. Well that would be nice if the entire thing wasn’t chipping. Do not buy this unless you only want it to last a short amount of time and have a couple of miserable weekends trying to remove it.

Response from Joanne, Behr Customer CareMay 3, 2021
Hi LakeLife, thank you for your review. I'm so sorry the paint is peeling and chipping across the entire deck and that sanding isn't working. Since the peeling is widespread, I recommend removing the coating by sanding with coarse sandpaper like 40-60 grit sandpaper or a pressure washer on a low setting. Then you can clean the surface, let it dry, and apply a new coating of your choice. Customer satisfaction is important to us, and we appreciate your feedback. I'll reach out to you directly to assist you with this further. Thank you again for taking the time to share your experience with us, and I hope to hear from you soon! -Joni
do not use this product!
i bought this deck coating at the end of the 2020 summer and it was applied by a professional. after application I found that it stains very easily from normal foot dirt and leaves. I also found that the deck gets soo warm in the sun that you cannot walk barefoot on it. I have never had this problem with previous deck paints.

Response from Joanne, Behr Customer CareApr 13, 2021
Hi Theo29, thank you for your review. I’m so sorry the deck gets dirty easily and hot to walk on. I recommend cleaning the surface with our All-In-One Wood Cleaner to try removing the dirt. Also, if preferred, you can recoat in a lighter color, as lighter colors won’t retain as much heat as darker colors. Customer satisfaction is important to us, and we appreciate your feedback. I’ll reach out to you directly to assist you with this further. Thank you again for taking the time to share your experience with us, and I hope to hear from you soon! -Joni
Great coverage
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Great product for old deck. Very thick formula but easy to apply. Covers most of the cracks in the wood giving it a fresh look. I just hope it will last long.
