Is your Semi-Transparent Concrete Stain suitable for stucco wall?

Asked by: jc
The Behr response to your question says that it is not for vertical applications, yet the product description on the Home Depot webpage states, "Ideal for interior and exterior, horizontal and vertical surfaces".

Can I just use a roller to apply the stain or do I have to use a pump sprayer?

Asked by: Lump
I stained my deck 2 years ago with semi-transparent Behr, using an air compressor at 40 psi. It went on well but now needs to be redone, as it is now blotchy (1 coat). Can I still use the same technique? Is was stained slate gray. Is it still available on-line, as it goes well with the surroundings?

Customer Reviews

BEHR Premium 1 gal. #STC-21 Warm Shale Semi-Transparent Flat Interior/Exterior Concrete Stain is rated 3.6 out of 5 by 239.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Semi=Transparent Patio Stain After much research, I chose to stain my patio with the BEHR concrete stain instead of painting. Since the concrete patio was already porous, I washed and rinsed the patio and let it dry thoroughly. I wanted my patio to have the appearance of large rocks instead of just the somewhat plain look of a concrete floor. I drew off patterns for the rocks using a charcoal color paint and a small fan brush used for painting landscapes. Once that was dry, I applied the BEHR primer. The primer was allowed to dry about 3 hours. I then applied two coats of the BEHR stain and allowed that to dry thoroughly (overnight). The next morning I applied the sealer, still using a roller to apply the sealer, and the patio is absolutely beautiful. I didn't move my furniture back on the patio for four days. I have had so many wonderful comments on my patio that it is unbelievable and it was not much work at all. I did change rollers at intervals throughout the process. The patio is absolutely gorgeous! My garage floor is 50 years old and with 50 years of spilled oil, tranny fluid, paint, resin and who knows what all else ground into the concrete floor. I also had lots of small holes and some cracks here and there. I filled those with Bondo and sanded down the excess. As many of the reviews have said, its extremely important to start with a clean floor before you apply the stain process. So, I cleaned this grimy floor for the better part of a week, using three different types of environmentally safe cleaners and degreasers, washing down with water after each cleaning. I used KrudCutter twice, then followed up where needed with Oil Eater Cleaner Degreaser for the oily areas, and Citrus Strip Paint and Varnish Stripping Gel for spilled paint. Then I used Citric Magic Heavy Duty Cleaner Degreaser one last time over the whole garage floor and foundation walls. I did not pressure wash. And after trying a couple of test spots with stain, I decided the etcher/degreaser was not necessary. After that I followed the Manufacturer’s instructions for the stain prep. I used the bonding primer because i had a lot of dark spots remaining. And after applying the stains (letting each color dry before adding the next), I used two coats of the Low Luster Concrete Sealer. The end result turned out great, no issues, and looks fantastic!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Flag stone color? Chose water stone. Unfortunately on my concrete pavers, it had a lavendar tint. Original color was a flag stone but they were not sealed so those close to the wall kept their color. The others reverted back to a tan brown with exposed agergate. Fortunately HD can and will teak the color. We added green and black. I bought a second can. Same formula for water stone but added green with less black Spraying tips. At first I sprayed on dry pavers, as suggested however it was going on thick and looked splatted and painted. I wet the patio and the sprayed the stain. Now I could move it around with the broom to achieve transparency. Both colors looked very similar so I used both. Love the end result. The temperature on my patio dropped 10°. Sealing pavers with the Behr sealer in the matte finish Next I plan on lime washing the brick

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Results! We followed another reviewers directions (BellaBee from 2013) and had a fantastic result! We tore the carpet up in our basement and rented a diamond blade sander to get all the adhesive off and then followed the same steps as BellaBee. It is KEY to do the proper steps for floor prep for this to turn out! After degreasin/cleaning then the etching/cleaning process I used a cotton tshirt to blot the first stain on which was Loden semi transparent. It dried quickly. Next color was Warm Shale. I grabbed another clean cotton cloth and patted it on at randaom. The last color was Chickory and I used it sparingly. We are thrilled with the floor. I ended up highlighting the cracks in our floor for interest. I let the stain in for 30 seconds and then dried brushed it. Fantastic! I also covered in two coats of Low Luster shine. We have received so many compliments on the high end look.

This is based on the misleading and inaccurate depiction of the product in the Behr product catalog available in the concrete paint section. In the photo, depicting the final finish, it appears the stain contains little black particles, which is one of the reasons I purchased it. The actual paint however, is totally lacking these particles, it is just plain stain. Per Behr, the black speckled floor appearance in the product brochure actually shows the concrete showing through the stain - ever heard of black concrete? Although Behr has been very responsive to my complaint and will refund the purchase price, this does not negate the fact of a misleading and totally incorrect product depiction. 100% disappointed.

Looks great the first season, not bad the next season and redid it basically 2 years after the initial application because of peeling. First time I power washed, this time I used concrete cleaner because I wanted to layer on what was already there. Did not use any sealer afterwards, but am considering it this time around. Highlights: 1. Used a brush for the edges of the pool and the outside edges of the concrete. Those held up well, much better than the rolled on centers. However that would take an extreme amount of time and stain to brush my entire area. 2. Don't drag furniture on your stained concrete... 3. Dries quickly 4. For reference my pool is 12x24' and I needed 4 gallons the first time and 2 1/2 gallons the second time to stain my area. 5. Total staining time was just under 5 hours without cleaning and prep. 6. My concrete was 20 years old when stained and it really gave it a fresh look. Only grievance is that I will be doing this project every other year for the rest of my life...

I used a pump sprayer to apply and it worked great. I would recommend not using an old sprayer. You want the spray adjustment tip to be clean for a flawless pattern. Make sure you cover boarder edge walls with tape and or cardboard because you will get over spray along any walls. I applied in a circular pattern, alternating clockwise and counter clockwise often. My patio was in pretty good shape and without any deep dirt or stains. I pressure washed after using a long handled scrub brush with a concrete cleaner to remove any dirt/mold & mildew. After the first coat dries you will notice small patches without stain. I applied a second coat that covered these patches. Then the third coat gave me the color I wanted and a really nice texture. Now that its been on a few weeks, it is really easy to clean and is holding up great to heavy foot traffic and it is not slippery when wet like a coating of paint would be. Very high recommend this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Storm Shelter Makeover We recently bought a house in the country which already had a storm shelter right off the patio in the back yard. It was just a big hunk of concrete and not cost effective to move. Being surrounded by pastures, we still wanted to keep it, so decided to make it a focal point. You never know when you might need to jump down into one of those! We will add perennials and herbs around it as well and make a rock garden go across the top and into the yard. I'm sure this will be long term project but at least it has a good start with color on the concrete. I used the BEHR PREMIUM® Semi-Transparent Concrete Stain in different colors and brushed onto the concrete making a random pattern. This way, it softened the appearance of the shelter and I figured, why not add a tornado to the door too! The stain went on easily with a brush and clean up was simple. The door was metal so it took a few more coats to get the finish to show through. It was nice to be able to use a concrete stain in an artistic way and I liked the earthy colors. Very nice. Thank you Behr!
