Questions & Answers

We used natural NO.500 and the store doesn't have this color. They stated Clear 500N is the same. They look different.

Asked by: Vic
Behr Representative, Ran in to this same problem. Is there a recipe for tinting (how much tint needs added)? I have half a project done, and they are not the same at all. Not sure if individual store will know the formula to tint, so I am wondering if you can help. CP

Questions about transparency and durability

There is some color to the Natural Transparent finish, so why is it called transparent? The color is lovely, but I'm curious. Also, hope it holds up. Wish I had read some of the reviews of this product before totally relying on Home Depot's recommendation to buy it. As I search the net, the reviews are really mixed, more negative than I had hoped. Please tell me the stain won't start coming off in a year. The can says four years! Thank you.
Asked by: teamedup
It is what I would call semi-transparent, some color with a clear coating. It is not very durable, so if it will be getting quite a bit of wear I would try something different. I have had good success with Olympic.

After applying Natural-500, How long must it sit to prevent damage from rain?

Asked by: KennethB
The finish must be dry in order to act properly to seal out rain droplets, and the finish must have been applied thoroughly to all surfaces of the wood to act as a uniform skin over the wood surface. Holidays in the surface application wherein some areas were not coated thoroughly will soak up rain water as quickly as any untreated wood. Natural rain events will eventually have a weathering effect on the wood because wood is a dynamic material which expands and contracts naturally with its own moisture content which can, over time, cause miniature fissures in the grain surface of lumber which then have no blockage to the passage of water on the surface. Read recoat instructions, and probable life of applied finish offered by the manufacturer. Locale and weather conditions vary across the country for probable weather exposure water levels and conditions.

I had my deck power washed before and applied it 2 weeks later. If anyone is wondering. I put it on in 87 degree temps and it rained 5 hours later and it didn't ruin it. The water started beading when it rained. It's easy to apply and the color is great. I would use this again. I took me and my mom about 7 hours total. We had to stop on the first day because we ran out of this. I'm so glad I didn't pay someone $2000 to do this for me. It looks good for an amateur. There's a couple of spots that are bad, because the coat overlapped. But all in all I'm happy. Just do one coat. That's all you need.

Each year I used a different waterproofing product to coat the logs on the outside of my home. I went to Home Depot at the recommendation of a Behr rep I tried the waterproofing wood finish and clear. Two coats went on very easy and the poles went from bleached out to a beautiful honey color. Thank you!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very nice results and easy to work with I have been working on our fence, completely refinishing what we have built. Started by sanding and then hand painted this product over more than 500 linear feet of at least 6foot fencing. This product absorbed very quickly into the wood, and in most cases I was in at least 2 coats and in most places I am going with 3 because I like the finish, and I am hoping to not have to do this again for a very long time. The result is very beautiful and puts a finishing detail into our yard. It makes it feel much more finished, tropical and lush with our landscaping. The finish is beige in the can, and is golden brown on the wood. I bought it for an 8 foot high cedar fence and although I noticed the liquid was beige when I stirred and poured it into the tray, I thought it would dry clear. By the time I realized it was drying an orange color, it was too late and I had to proceed with the product for the entire 100 foot length. If it runs, it leaves a colored trail, like a paint or stain. I wish I had believed a few other reviews that stated this product is not clear, but thought that perhaps there was a glitch in production and BEHR had corrected it. Unfortunately, they apparently know this product is not clear, as stated, but don't care to correct it. My good opinion of this company has downgraded.

Do not use this product over an existing colored stain. It has a brown tint already in it. Per Behr customer support, "Although our no. 500 Transparent Wood Finish is labeled clear, there is a little pigment in it which helps with UV protection". That may be fine if you are using it on natural, unstained surfaces, but it's a misrepresentation of the actual color. If you want actual clear, use a product like Thompson's Water Seal.

I first tried to apply tried to apply with one of those foam or sponge type applicator. Since I did not do any sanding before hand the foam didn't work well so I used a brush rated for stain. At first I was ready to return the stain.... it is not clear and it does darken the wood some. After thinking about it, I figured it would probably be impossible to make a stain perfectly clear. I do a fare amount of painting for side work and rarely use stain, so it seemed very thin in consistency compared to paint. But that's how it is. The stain went on easily and evenly. It dried to the touch quickly. I was working in direct sun.... instructions clearly advise against that. All done it looked really good! I plan to purchase more of the Behr premium stain and apply another coat.

Although it states "transparent" it is not , but the color is great and shows the grain, glad I didn't go with the "semi transparent". Good coverage, but follow the instructions to have even coverage. Help from the actual Behr rep at the St. Petersburg store, regarding colors, type of brush and rollers to use, was a big plus. Thanks

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful Result We used Behr Weatherpoofing Wood Finish on our benches and pergolas at our Coffee Shop in south Louisiana where the humidity is high and lots of rain and sun. The product has held up beautifully and the color choice was beautiful. Highly recommend this product for it's durability. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
