Questions & Answers

How long before battery starts the pump after losing power? Like during an outage.

Asked by: Mn
immediately. It is not like a back up generator that has to start up. There is continuous power to the sump pump whether it's from the outlet or Battery.

How do you know when your battery is nearing the end of its life? Mine is 5 1/2 years old
Asked by: Paul
The one I had cracked and was leaking acid all over the place so there was no question about it being done. I would guess at 5 1/2 years it is beyond its expected life and is no longer reliable just like a car battery would be at that age. Next time I will spend the extra money and get the prefilled and sealed battery. Well worth it not to have to fool around with boxes of acid.

Looking at the Basement Watchdog Big Standby Battery under the specifications it says no batteries included. The cheap model of the tow does have batteries. What does this mean?
Asked by: JRS
It means nothing. Mine came as one battery, just like in the picture. Someone entering specification info was probably confused.

Customer Reviews

Big Standby Battery is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 307.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Battery life interpretation question The Glentronics manual states that you should replace the battery when the control panel indicates that there are 3 hours of pumping time remaining. If you started out with having 7.5 hours of pumping time, then you now have 40% battery capacity left. Is this point reached after their stated 5 to 7 years of expected battery life? That's not been my experience. My 100 months of battery experience has been this: replaced 1st battery after 46 months, 2nd battery after 21 months, 3rd battery after 32 months, and that's with conscientious battery maintenance, and a good charging control unit. It appears to me that Glentronics has a battery quality control problem, that's been going on for a long time. Regarding Customer Service, Glentronics is Excellent. They repaired my control unit and returned it to me in 2 days. Very knowledgeable staff. It was a real joy to experience staff that truly serves its customers. Now if they could only address the battery quality issue.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Nice system.....HORRIBLE battery! I have become a pro at installing these batteries for as often as I have to replace it! At roughly $150.00 +tax each time, I would think that they could produce a battery that would last longer than 23 months with minimal use at best. I am diligent with maintenance (adding distilled water to the battery) when I am alerted to do so, but still can't get more than 23 months out of it. Overall, the system compliments my 3/4 hp main pump, but at the rate I am having to replace the battery, I may end up cutting my losses and going to a whole new system with a marine battery. The other issue with this battery is that it is only covered under manufacturer warranty for 1 year, but states that it has a life span of 5-7 years? I don't know who's doing the math on their end, but it just isn't adding up! I believe this will be the last Watch Dog battery I purchase before scrapping the entire system for something more reliable that comes with a better warranty. Who knows, you may even see it curbside before that!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Watch Dog Battery If you purchase the Complete watchdog system, the system monitors the battery. When the water level is low the alarm sounds. This comes with the Watchdog combo kit. Maintance free marine batterys do not last as long as batterys that you add distilled water to when low. When the acid/water drys up in a maintence free deep cycle battery the battery is dead. When the acid gets low in this battery you add distilled water. Sears 5 year deep cycle marine battery is 249, the same as this battery. You can buy a 2 year battery for cheap. You need to purchase the complete watchdog combo sump pump that comes with all the alarms and tells you when the water i s low. It also automatically keeps the battery charged up for you. A 5 year marine battery, with proper water levels and always kept at a full charge will last 7 years. To make a deep cycle battery last the longest you want to keep it at a full charge. It is just reckless not to be smart enough to check the water level in a deep cycle battery.

I have a legacy Basement Watchdog Special (BWSP), so I am forced to buy this type of replacement battery. This is my third, with each one lasting about 5 years or so. It's a good battery except for two things: 1) It is grossly overpriced everywhere (with acid, it ran $170); and, 2) It still requires a LOT of manual work, i.e., filling with acid, topping off with distilled water, etc. The only way around this is to replace the pump itself, but that's still running well!

My first one lasted 6.5 years, could have gone longer but it was starting to go through electrolyte at an accelerated rate. Purchased a replacement yesterday, $160 with acid and tax out the door. One side of the battery was bowed in, most likely occurred when they sucked the air out of the cells. Either the plastic is too thin (doubt it) or they used a massive amount of vacuum to evacuate the air. Kind of heavy to be carting back and forth. Glentronics I think has nice products, but this battery gives them a black eye. Their tech support suggested taking it back for a refund as it is defective, the plates inside that one cell were crushed, which will most likely result in that cell prematurely failing. Went to Batteries and Bulbs and purchased a Duracell Ultra BCI Group 31M Deep Cycle Marine & RV Battery, you just need to attach the fluid sensor to the positive side of the battery to keep the alarm from going off.

The first lasted just under 2 years, and the second lasted less than 3 before the system alert indicated that a new battery was needed. I checked the water levels 2-3 times per year, but they never seem to last well. I'm disappointed with the battery, but am hesitant to switch because I'm not sure if the charger will handle anything else.

This was purchased as a replacement for the original battery that was over 5 years old. I would have preferred the maintenance free battery, but it is not compatible with my system. However this one works fine and only requires water a couple of times per year. My biggest dislike, is that it is difficult to tell the level of the acid/water when filling it. Maybe it's just me.

If it lasts as long as the original, I am good for another nine years (it should, it’s an exact replacement). The way to go!
