Product Overview

  • Kills mosquitos that lay their eggs in contained spaces
  • Significantly reduces mosquito population by targeting eggs
  • Mosquito traps should be set 25 feet apart
Trap-N-Kill is an economical, extremely simple, and effective method for controlling Aedes and Culex mosquito species. The method consists of a cup system with an overflow hole and a strip treated with a very small amount of a pesticide material. The pesticide chosen has extremely high activity against target mosquitoes. Within the trap is a landing strip of velour paper and a pesticide-treated strip. The trap also contains water, which the female mosquitoes seek as a requirement for their eggs. The velour paper provides the mosquitoes with a preferred texture, on which they'll land to lay their eggs, staying in the trap long enough to receive a lethal dose from the pesticide. Because the pesticide doesn't kill them instantly, they may fly out of the trap and will die nearby.
  • Targets container-breeding species
  • This DIY pest control works against mosquitoes that carry dengue, chikungunya, west nile virus, and yellow fever
  • Approach is superior to simply trapping and removing eggs laid by female container breeding mosquitoes
  • By killing adult female container-breeding mosquitoes, the population of biting mosquitoes is substantially reduced, thus reducing both the potential for disease transmission and the breeding stock for the next generation
  • Mosquitoes will seek it

How many holes should be on the side of this product. Mine has one hole but looks like they forgot to punch the hole on the other side indentation.
Asked by: Jenomarie
I checked with the company too. One hole is all that is needed. The side holes main purpose is to prevent it from over flowing from rain. These things were originally designed for tropical climates where they get a lot of rain. These things really work, but you need more than you think to be really effective.

Pesticide

What's the pesticide in this product?
Asked by: alow
Excellent answer so far, except that the pesticide tab responds only to temperature, not barometric pressure. In cool areas the tab will last longer than in hot areas. Tabs used in Hawaii are lasting beyond 11 weeks.

As long as the instructions are followed (shady locations, 25 feet apart, 45 day pesticide replacement...), yours will work too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Kills the next generation The instructions are confusing, but it references a YouTube video and I recommend you watch it. This has made a huge difference in our yard...

I've only had these set up for about 3-4 weeks, so I don't know how well they work yet. I placed them as directed - ~25' apart in areas open to weather but under leaf cover. I have honestly noticed a significant increase in Asian tiger mosquitoes, but that could be a coincidence or that the traps are indeed attracting mosquitoes, which is the downside of traps on a small (40' x 110') property like ours. They now swarm around my lower legs whereas before it was just a few at a time. But I want to give this time to decide whether it's working well. The one negative comment I have is that the instructions are horrendous and don't match the product: - The images and instructions must be of a different style - 2 side holes, a funnel-type feature inside are in the images/instructions, but not in the actual product. - The outside of the box and the inside give different timings on when to replace the inner parts.: 4 months vs 10 weeks! This is a huge discrepancy. - The red paper that's supposed to reach from bottom to top and overhang the lip is not long enough to do this. It's also very unstable. It should either have a wider bottom or we need small pebbles to weight it down. I put mine in small plastic flower pots just wider than the product and much shorter. Seems to work ok. I am hopeful that the product might work even though the people making it do not care enough to provide customers good instructions. It wouldn't have been hard to do that.

Like someone else said in an earlier review, if you have the ability to read and follow basic directions, this product will work great for you to reduce mosquitoes around your house and yard. There are several bad reviews from people that say they didn't find any dead mosquitoes or just a few in the trap. The trap isn't designed to kill the mosquitoes while they are inside it. Like the instructions say, most will die a short time after they exit the trap instead of inside it. I originally bought two traps in early May to see if they would work. I put one behind a tall hedge by the garage and another behind a tree next to the fence in my backyard. I just recently serviced the two traps I originally got in May and bought a third trap to put in the corner on the other side of the backyard behind a shrub. When I opened up the two traps that have been in use the velour landing strip was covered with hundreds of eggs, so I know the traps are working. (In addition to the noticeably lower adult mosquito population near the areas where I setup the traps.) It didn't totally eliminate the local mosquito population but it definitely put a big dent in it. Well worth the $8 initial purchase and around $2 every other month for the replacement insecticide tabs. Some useful tips: - The traps are supposed to be most effective if setup in shaded locations, preferably behind or near vegetation. These are the type of places where mosquitoes most like to hang out. - Also use bottled or filtered water (as it doesn't have chlorine in it which would otherwise deter mosquitoes until it gets a chance to evaporate out of the water) to fill or top off the traps. Pond water is even better as it most closely simulates natural conditions. - The instructions don't tell you to staple the velour strip to the inside of the trap when setting it up but I did and I think it helps the strip stay in place and flush to the side of the trap wall. - The traps work great to reduce the mosquito population near the immediate areas they are placed. But you still might get some mosquitoes that wander over from nearby neighboring properties. For this reason you would get even better results if you are able to convince neighbors that live close you to set up a couple of traps to cover their property.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Mosquito treatment? I have had the traps x4 out on my back patio for over 4 weeks but have not noticed any change in the mosquito population. I will give them several more weeks before my final decision

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Stupid design The instructions ONLY mention of the pesticide tab is "see diagram". The diagram shows it being stuck to the top inside of the container, but it's not adhesive. If you download a QR reader on your smartphone (if you have one) and watch the painfully boring and lengthy video, you'll discover that they want you to use a household stapler to staple it to the container. You're supposed to use gloves to do this. Are you supposed to wash your household stapler, too? Dumbest design, ever.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from If you have the ability to read and follow basic directions, this product will work to reduce you... If you have the ability to read and follow basic directions, this product will work to reduce your local mosquito population. There are several bad reviews from people complaining that they don't see any dead mosquitoes or just a few in the rap. They clearly didn't read how this trap works and most likely did not follow the easy instructions. You're not supposed to see many dead mosquitoes in the trap. I've had mine out for about 3 weeks now. There's about a dozen dead mosquitoes in it, which is nice... but that's not the point. On the landing strip I can see HUNDREDS of eggs. And no live larvae in the water. Which means this is working great. The eggs will never get a chance to grow into adults. I've noticed significantly less mosquitoes in my yard, but it also hasn't rained here in weeks. So I can't really attribute it all to the trap, but the fact that I see so many eggs inside the trap lets me know that this is working and will make a difference. I'm going to buy two more. I'd say it's well worth the $8 or $9. Even if it only reduces the population by 25% I'd feel that it's worth the price. If you have mosquitoes as bad as at my house, you'll be happy with any reduction in their population.
