I bought several of these over the winter for starting seeds indoors. At first I thought the growing medium was kind of cool but as I began working with it I started to have a concern. The growing medium is a fairly tight wad. The medium wasn’t tightly packed in the cell, it actually fit nicely. What I mean is the medium was like a pliable wad of whatever it’s made of, but very tightly packed even when saturated with water. Basically it’s like a sponge with a small hole in it for the seed. I had difficulty getting larger seeds into the starter holes but didn’t think too much about it while filling the trays. Eventually I noticed seedlings having a difficult time emerging from the tight wad of growing medium. The seed casing that normally gets lifted up out of the soil by the growing seedling was stuck in the growing medium. The first leaves weren't being exposed. I found I could help free the seed casing by gently prying the tight wad of growing medium from around the emerging seed casing, and eventually the seedling would start growing normally. Well, another problem that I just recently discovered when transplanting the seedlings is the roots didn’t seem to be able to penetrate the tight wad of growing medium. As a result, there was basically only a single root that could only grow out of the bottom hole. My experiences are based on working with milkweed (a very robust grower), not some dainty plant.

We're sorry that you had this problem. Although this is a tight growing media, it's designed to have the roots grow through the pores of the plug.

    Simple to Use, Worked Well
I used a seed starter tray once before but I think I liked the Black Magic one a little better. The peat moss plugs have larger holes in them which make it easy to pop in the seeds. They soaked up water well, just like a sponge, and every other day I added water. After 5 days I had growth in all the plugs which was impressive. The tray is normal plastic, bends a little bit but nothing unusual. There's holes under each plug section to soak up water from the tray. It was very easy to use, it's all set up in the package so all I did was add water, seeds, and set it in a sunny spot.
