BonAire vs Master Cool or Champion
I am a retired General Contractor and was done with the old design of evaporative coolers that are ineffective and expensive to maintain. I replaced my 2 champion units with 2 new BonAire 5000 units. The 1st thing you will notice about your BonAire is the way it is engineered. I say engineered, because it took some thinking to redesign the normal evaporative cooler design. You will notice the 1st thing is the composite material the unit is made from, strong yet light enough to lift on the roof in pieces, then assemble. I had to change the configuration from a down draft to a side draft unit and had no problems interpreting the directions provided in the users manual. The next thing to notice is the thick pads used other competitors. The paddle fan is definitely an upgrade to the old squirrel cage, fan belt and pullies required for other evap units. This unit gets rid of all that maintenance! I also noticed the sealed pump which will last longer than the old versions. I love the sealed piping from the pump to the pads and this configuration will help with the conditioning of the hard water in my area. Once I installed and fired up the unit, the 1st thing I noticed was the volume of air it pushes in comparison to my old units. It's volume is double the old AC Unit and much quieter. This will aid in reducing our electric bill as our old units were running 24/7 during the hot months in New Mexico. I have been running these units for 2 weeks not and I am "knocked off my feet" with their performance. The only complaint in our household now is, that it gets too cold in the house! Believe me it is easier to adjust our Evap Cooler Thermostat rather that cussing as I went on the roof to maintain my old units.

            Cools the house
Didn’t want to replace our cooler with the old style metal cooler, that rust so easily. After searching Home Depot, found this & ordered right away. Finally installed it & works flawlessly. Air is much fresher, cooler & lot quieter. Family very happy we made a great choice. Thanks to Home Depot, for making our order & pickup so smooth. Elsa

I debated over the champion / mastercool / essick air units, but I eventually chose the Bon Aire. Pros: - All plastic enclosure which means no rusting out. - the cooler disassembles into six sides plus the fan assembly making it easy to hoist it to my second floor roof. The fan weighs the most at probably 25lbs. - axial fan instead of a centrifugal fan means that the cooler had a lower vertical profile compared to coolers with squirrel cages. - will cool my two floor 2100sq ft house to 68F on LOW setting with the cooler in full sun and the exterior temperatures in the low 90s. - not loud at all. Cons: - I bought a standard evaporative cooler install kit from Hercules Industries (home depot used to sell their kits). It contains the roof flashings, flexible duct, register and DIAL (universal) leg kits. ALL of DIAL's leg kits are meant to slide up the corner of the cooler to adjust its height. This is impossible on the Bon-Aire cooler, the legs are attached to the base and cannot slide up the sides of the cooler. This means cutting the roof jacks with a reciprocating saw to height. Overall: I highly recommend this cooler, just be prepared to be a bit resourceful (highly recommend dry fitting your cooler and roof jack / legs to make sure everything fits).

This unit is only a couple of months old, but it is working great. It takes a few weeks for the new stinky smell to leave, but it eventually does. I’m excited not to have to deal with a rusting pan!

Returned due to a smell of plastic when the swamp cooler was turned on. Would not recommend.

Say goodbye to your old rust bucket!
This thing is different, and after decades of dealing with rust bucket metal coolers, I was ready to try it. I like the plumbing, no spider to leak on your motor and wires. Also it has a distributor valve that you can adjust for correct water flow to the pads. No belt or bearings to grease because it's direct drive. People say it's loud, I think that's just because it pushes a lot of air! One thing to keep in mind is that the screws are only going in to plastic, so tighten by hand or you'll risk stripping out the plastic. Also, you'll have to come up with your own way of connecting the bleed line. The stub coming off the valve is solid plastic, even after snipping the end off. I ended up using the 4th distributor valve outlet and making my own bleed line connection. So far, so good. My 6 year old Master Cool is already rusting badly, I'm thinking of replacing it with a Bonaire as well (our house has two coolers). We'll see how it holds up to the brutal New Mexico sun over time.
