Can it be used for a floating floor?

Hi there! Thank you for contacting us with your installation question. The 5" Prestige Natural Maple Solid Hardwood cannot be installed by floating it as this does not have a locking mechanism. The planks are tongues and grooves which need to be mechanically fastened. Also, when installing a plank wider than 4" we recommend that you use assisted glue in addition to the mechanical fasteners to avoid seasonal distortion. The installer should be reminded that adhesives used for this purpose will not perform their function when used in conjunction with a moisture retardant. Glue-assisted applications will not be satisfactory without direct contact with the subfloor. The glue should be a premium grade urethane construction adhesive applied in a serpentine pattern to the back of the planks. This product has a 50 year warranty. What dictates the quality of the hardwood across all brands is the finish warranty. Finish warranty refers to the finish actually wearing through. This is a function of a number of proprietary factors including finish type, thickness, composition, amount of possible additives to the finish to prevent wear. We will cover manufacturing defects only.

absulotely horrible milling
The wood is fine ... the finish is reasonble ... the milling so bad that you cannot lay a great floor (this was the second try first 'Coastal grey was sent back - 1/8 width variance)width are not consistent, Toung and grove milled to sloppy to properly sest and aline the boards in elevation .... some so bad they are firced out of alinement creating offsets ... ends are out of square (never mind the two boards that were 1/4" out of squareDO NOT BUY THIS IF YOU WANT A NICE FLOOR(sorry for typos ... impossible to get back and edit)

Very Classy Hardwood Look
I ordered 12 boxes. All the wood look great except for one of the boxes in which some of the wood had some sort of minor damages. I was still able to use most of the wood from this box. After installing the floor it has given the room (bedroom) an elegance which was beyond my expectations. It is very glossy which it highlights the dirt but it is definitely worth it. This was my first time installing hardwood and I am very please with the way it came out. Highly recommend this solid hardwood for its elegance and ease of installation.

Tongue and groove fit isn’t always tight dueTo slight warping and inconsistent groove cuts. Still wondering where I can get somefiller which will help hide the grooves. Since the tongues in the boards have no finish on them it really makes these gaps obvious.

The floors are beautiful, but there were a lot of...
The floors are beautiful, but there were a lot of short pieces and also ones that were not acceptable, so we ended up having to order an extra box to make up for it. Overall, we're happy with it and the color matched well to previously installed floors of 2" width that we installed about ten years ago. There was a step down into the newly remodeled space, so the color consistency was important since we were changing the width of the boards in the updated space. We have two dogs, and the finish on the floors is holding up very well considering how much abuse it gets (we have a house in the country, with pets, and men who don't remember to take their boots off on a pretty regular basis).

Mostly Short lengths
Many short lengths, wide variation in wood grain including some black defects. Some tongue milling defects. Much waste.

mixed quality
The finish of the boards was consistent and generally of good quality. However, the variation of the board widths, sometimes as much as a fat 1/16" of an inch, made for some very ugly gaps. I understand that the linear feet in each box comes in random length, but there were far too many 24" and under within a single box. Which meant a great deal of waste. I would not recommend this product to anyone.

Looks Great but plan on plenty of waste
The floor looks great! We had installed in LR/DR/Kit/FR/Office and a foyer. The samples in the stores (we saw it in 4 locally), give the impression this is clear wood. It is NOT! It is a mix of clear and multiple other grades. The pro installers had a TERRIBLE TIME installing this! Our first order of 49 boxes had to be replaced because the boards were cut to different widths (even on the same board one side is wider than the other and some cases thinner in the middle of the board than the ends) On replacement, though somewhat better still had uneven boards, plus, the wood looked like someone had taken a black marker to it. They had to order another 20 boxes for the install to be finished due to the waste. A few months later we had it installed in an office, but since the installer was the same as the previous he knew how to deal with it, and though a slow install, he knew how to pick and chose to get it right. The final install we had was in a foyer/hallway. Different installer this time, and he found that if he pulled all the clear wood it fit together fine, but if he used the lesser grade wood, it wouldn't fit right -one side would be fine the other end was about a 1/16" thinner. The job should have required 7 boxes and he had to go through 12 to find the wood to fit together correctly. Now that its done we're VERY happy, but 3 separate professional installers agonized over getting it right. I've done floors before, and would have never been able to get this done looking the way it ended up. Home Depot was great in taking care of me, and the installers were excellent! Just if you buy, I would recommend professional install.

Horribly soft wood
The hardwood looks gorgeous at first but it scratches easily especially with kids, light usage will scratch the surface very visibily. After 6 months of use marks can be seen all over the floor.Dropping small objects or even dragging a chair will cause visible scratches and dents. The boxes also came with a high percentage of shorts and pieces that were not sq, this is an installers nightmare as this leaves fine cracks and uneven edges between boards. The manufacturers supposedly 25 yr warrant means nothing as the told us after we installed the wood there is nothing they can do although an independent HD inspectors reports showed the substandard quality.
