Q:Which repair pen would match a dark hickory floor the best?
by|Jun 28, 2020
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Hickory flooring tends to vary from a very red wood to a cool brown color. Due to these variations we would recommend the Mahogany, Cherry, or Walnut repair pens. As always we suggest to test color coordination on a scrap piece of flooring first before final application.

Q:When Scratch Cure Repair pen dries, is it a high shine to it, flat or slight shine on the area touched up?

    Answer This Question

A:  So far depending on how many layers I use it seems to be a satin finish. I would test an area on an edge or back, touch up always goes on a bit different on different stains and woods. So far it has worked for me using both a little or a lot of the touch up.

    by|Sep 17, 2019

A:  The Shine is dependent on the material you are applying it to and how deep the scratch is. If you are on the top wear layer the shine will most likely add to the repair and can be buffed to limit the shine. However, if you are repairing a deep scratch past the wear layer, it will have a more matte finish.

Q:Will this wear off? We have a knick in vinyl flooring planks located in a high traffic area.

      Answer This Question

A:  I have used this on my laminate wood floors and damp moped and steam moped over it and it seems to be permanent. Used it over a year ago and no trace of the touch ups.

A:  Durability seems good. I suppose you can always reapply if it does wear.

      by|Jun 11, 2019

A:  There are a few variables that need to be taken into consideration when it comes to the durability of this type of repair, such as, the traffic level where the repair is located and the depth of the repair. Since this will be a high traffic area you may need to reapply the repair after some time. If you need further information, feel free to contact us at 1-888-277-FLOR.

        by|May 5, 2023

A:  Hi Kgm7 I think this will depend on the area you have to repair, and how much traffic the area will get. I think this is pretty permanent but also if you see the area, needs to be touched up, i would touch up again.

          Q:Are these oil-based?

          Answer This Question

A:  These pens are not oil based, they are water based,non-flammable and non-toxic.

A:  CalFlor ScratchCure Repair Pens are not oil-based rather, pigmented alcohol-based.

          by|May 5, 2023

A:  The label doesn't indicate one way or the other, but it is non-toxic so I doubt it is oil-based.

            by|Jun 12, 2019

A:  Hi Judy No sorry this CalFlor scratch pen is not a oil based pen. This one is a pigmented alcohol based. However this is still a really great repair pen, with many color choices to choose from for your different wood types. It works well with coverage, you can darker the color with repeating going over what your doing. Does not dry fast, so if you make a mistake, easy to wipe off. It worked for me very well. I used this Walnut color on cherry and it did an excellent job in matching my cherry on cabinets, and furniture and also trim.

              by|May 5, 2023

A:  NO.....they are not oil-based but rather, a pigmented alcohol-based just like any good felt marker. It is nice that it comes in so many different wood types, and even nicer that with each additional application, it will darken to match your exact shade of wood. Even goof-proof so that you can wipe of any smudges you make during the application process. This truly is a good quality product that does what it says it does, and that is covers quick and easy with just a few strokes, depending on the damaged area's needs.Very nice finished with just a slight buffing to finish it off.

The Scratchcure walnut repair pen works great to hide imperfections, scratches or dings in our wood furniture and dark laminate flooring. The pen is easy to very easy to use, just like a marker, and really blended well with our furniture and floors. Just make sure to order the color closest to your furniture/floors, and it should be a good match to help hide the imperfections!

Not too bad. I had a few deep scratches in a pine coffee table. The pen/marker did a good job coloring the imperfection. The dual sided pen is nice depending on if you have a wide deep scratch or a thin one. The thin side has a very fine point. The fine point got into the deep scratches easily and applied the dye. It of course didn't solve the problem of the deep scratch but it did make it less noticeable. The pics shows are with a flash making the depth of the scratch more obvious than it really is

Great way to quickly address some minor scratches While there are many types of scratches in stained wood and laminates, one particular problem is that the exposed wood or substrate is often lighter and so catches your eye. This pen minimizes the contrast between a scratch and its surroundings. It's not magic but given the low cost and effort involved it's a good solution. More background: There are many types of scratches in wood and there is no easy solution to address them all. Generally you're dealing with either 1) a gouge through the finish that goes into the wood or 2) a scratch just affecting the clear surface finish. This pen partially addresses #1. When you gouge wood the exposed material is often not the right color and so now there's an obvious contrast (a light colored scratch in a dark floor.) This pen did a great job on these kinds of scratches I had and they no longer were obvious from a distance. What this won't solve is that some material is still missing from the wood so it will still not be smooth. For fixing that you either need to sand, re-stain, and refinish the area (a lot of work) or use a putty or wax filler. For issue #2 where just the surface finish is scratched you need need to sand lightly and refinish. Again, this pen isn't designed to address that in any way. It will not get you back to a perfectly even smooth finish. That takes a lot more work and money. Who is this for: People with scratches in oak floors or furniture where lighter colored wood is showing. Who isn't this for: People who are concerned about filling gouges in wood or having perfectly smooth finishes. For example, dog claw scratches that have just affected the clear finish on the floor won't be addressed by this pen. Other Thoughts: I liked that the pen was doubled ended as the two tips are different sizes and cover a wider set of situations. Conclusion: I'm happy with this product and would recommend it in the right circumstances.

I have used stain pens in the past and was a little apprehensive about trying another one. However, this one definitely surpasses the others I’ve tried. It covers the scratches and blends in perfectly. Keep in mind that you have to be sure that you get the right color stain pen to match the scratches in the wood that you were trying to fix. If you do, you should have a perfect match.

After opening the package, I was amazed that the Scratch cure had two types of Coloring Tips - one for large tip for application on broad/larger scratches and a Fine Tip for those narrow scratches. I tested the Scratch Cure on Various size scratches and the Light Oak did an excellent job covering the slight scratch.I had a couple of small dings where you could see the underlying wood and again a good job of "Covering" the wood. I must caution you that this does NOT fill in the dents and dimples - it just colors the wood. Additionally, we had a scratch Laminate Golden Oak Kitchen Cabinet and the color blended in just fine. For large spot repair of a water mark or candle/wax burn, this is not a good choice. Please make sure for the right repair, you choose the "Scratch Cure" that matches your wood. For simple repairs, its a winner!

Nice little scratch repair pen for less than $10. What I like: • It works. I filled a large area of scratches and the pen did very well. I attached photos of before and after. I spent about 5 minutes on it and could have spent more to make it look perfect, but like anything the more time you take the better it will look. • I like the two head sizes. My previous pen only had one size. • The lids seem to seal well which will hopefully help the pen last a long time before drying out. • If you mess up you can easily wipe the mark away if you do it quickly. • It does get darker with each additional stroke if your wood floor is dark. • It’s really easy to use and you immediately see the difference. What I don’t like: • Nothing sticks out to me. The pen works very well and it’s relatively cheap. Note: I don’t have any vinyl or laminate flooring in our home to test but if you have hard wood floor this pen does very well and I can’t recommend it enough.

I have to be honest and say before receiving this item, i was skeptical and doubtful. This is a Scratch Cure Pen, for your wood types, laminate, vinyl and is a repair pen for those akward touch ups of dings, scratches, and little dents. It absolutely minimizes those flaws, i was skeptical, but after receiving and using this product, it worked for what i needed it too. This Pen works on your vinyl and wood flooring, and also on furniture, and wood trim and paneling of the same color group. The one nice thing about this touch up pen, is that it does not dry out quickly on you, as some other furniture type markers i have used in the pass, making it much easier, if you have to wipe a mistake away. That i really like, all too often furniture markers dry quickly. Not this one. This Marker Pen has 2 different tip sizes for you. and one is a chiseled tip and the other has a fine ball point tip to it. This Marker Pen comes in different colors for you and you can also mix and match a color to your own liking. It is Non Toxic, which is what you want. This ScratchCure Walnut Repair Pen, worked for my needs of touching up some little dents and dings in some wood cherry trim, and doing what i needed it too. The color worked beautifully, pictures to follow. The walnut color worked out very well on my cherry wood trim on my laminate flooring, and aslo on my kitchen cabinets behind where the handle is where the wood was starting to fade, can you still see it, yes but much less noticeable. Give this Repair Pen a try, it does cover up minor scratches, dings, and dents, and also works on wood trim. Pretty happy with the results, as i stated, does it take the whole scratch away, no but what it does do is make it much less noticeable which is a good thing. It works on furniture for me better i think then wood trim. All and all i am pretty happy with the results, why not give this a try. Very easy to use, and as i have stated, if you make a mistake using this product, it does not dry out quickly as some other repair pens do. Give this a try, what do you have to lose.

Very Nice! i did not realize until i opened the packaging that this pen is double sided. One side is Fine tipped, the tip size is similar to that of a pen. The other side is wide, similar to that of a large highlighter. simple to use. if you are fixing a issue & it is not dark enough in one pass. Let it dry & re apply. repeat as needed. i found it easy to use.

I grabbed this to try disguising a bunch of damaged corners I have in my laminate flooring. Technically my floor's coloring is "hickory" but this was the closest match I could find. To be honest, I didn't bother with any of the preparation before applying it. It looks like it's just a permanent marker so I colored in the chips in the laminate. I think it looks pretty good considering it isn't an exact color match. The spots I did definitely look better than they did before. And so far the color is holding up to the floors being cleaned. I think the pictures speak for themselves.

Having just moved several hundred miles, we have several pieces of furniture that were dinged up in the process. I wanted to see how these pens performed as compared to applying a stain. The results of the pen application is decent - one doesn't notice the scratch without looking for it. It doesn't match the performance of a high quality stain, but is extremely easy to apply. It only gets 4 stars as it costs too much for the pen relative to the amount of product contained.
