Will the pellet stove work if the power goes out?

Asked by: Wonderingmind
No, it runs on electricity. In the manual it states it will shut off if the power goes out. I’m not sure if a generator might be an optional back up.

Why I am returning the stove: I am not happy, at all, that the description written by Castle, that there is a programmable "thermostat" feature is a total obfuscation. Yes, the controller that comes with the stove has what is called a "weekly feature" BUT the stove DOES NOT have an automatic turn off, even in temperature mode, to stay at a constant temperature. Therefore you have to constantly be playing around guessing either how to set 4 zones per day where the stove comes off and on or you get to manually turn it off and on all dang day! I called Castle customer service and they verified there is no true set to temperature feature. The Stove Itself: 1. Was really easy to install 2. Works very well heating up my small home - 900 sq ft. 3. Is relatively quiet when on I would recommend this stove, as I said, you live in a colder climate and really need constant heat. Not great if you want to just use in milder climates unless you are happy turning it off and on regularly manually or it is cold enough at night to run while you sleep.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Our stove Bought ours over a year ago. We have a 1000 sqft manufactured home. Had a long cold wet winter and spring here in Oregon. Wetest in 90 years. Didn't have a single problem with this stove. During the coldest. We used one 40 lbs bag a day. 5 bucks. Before we got our stove. We had an electric furnace. That really sucked. Could only run it to keep the chill out of the house. And weren't staying warm. Had issues with mildue and dampness. That problem has now been fixed with this crazy little stove. Never had a cold night or day. In fact, it worked too good at times. We love this stove. Only draw back. It doesn't have a connection for home thermostats. That would be very great thing. A lot of folks have limited space for a pellet stove. This one is perfect!! Being a small home. It's great. All you need is a 32x32 inch area. For an open area home. I think it could heat 2000 sqft area. I've gotten 6 of our friends to buy one. So if you think you need a huge stove. Think no more. This is a one to buy.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I can't really rate this as I do not yet... I can't really rate this as I do not yet have it installed. I did however start and burn the stove on my patio to remove any residue that might cause a fowl smell and to make sure the stove functioned as advertised. This type of household item needs to be tested as soon as possible because after installation, it will not be used six months out of the year, effectively reducing the warranty to six months. That being said, the stove worked perfectly on my patio, so I gave it a "Good" rating. I burned it for half hour or so, and it never missed a beat. I'll be able to give a better review after I get the stove installed and use it this fall after the weather cools.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Phenomenal Heat Yield, easy to program and great looks Purchased this stove from home depot for 999. It is nicely designed and looks great in my house. I paid for the installation, but could've easily done it myself ( I had to extend outside pipes later on anyway to recommended 3Ft). I love everything about the stove - easy to understand instructions, simple menu, autom it heated up 900sf house to a point where we had to open 3 windows, it was so hot. Two drawbacks: A) if you preset temperature to say 80F, it will run on highest fan setting (5) until thermostat matches preset temperature. Then the fan will switch to the lowest speed (1), but it will still keep blowing heat into the house, thermostat does not shut down the stove. When we got into the house, thermostat reached 97F, even though preset temperature was 80F. B) Stove was powered up twice during the month of September in Pocono Mountains, Pennsylvania. There were no pipe leaks, all pipe joints were treated with high temperature silicone, but there was a distinct smell of burnt plastic/paint. I called Castle stove support, and I was told that it's paint that burns inside, and the smell should be gone in 1 day of full use. Well, I'll keep you all updated.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Warms quickly and over 1500 sf I needed the stove for about 600 3 room area. It works very nicely warming that quickly. If I open doors and use it to warm a foyer and a hallway, it'll keep that warm too but it'll take a couple hours. One 40 pound bag burns in about 10 hours on med/high. I have not used the thermostat/timer feature. Since other reviewer's indicated that it doesn't actually shut off at a certain temperature. The remote is very nice though and works well, so if you're across the room you don't need to get up to adjust it. I imagine the timer to turn on an hour before you wake up or an hour before you get home would be nice.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I'm impressed I installed the stove in a 1200 sq. ft. cottage that has no insulation to allow use of the place in the spring and fall. It arrived well packaged, was easy to install, takes up little space, and is very simple to operate. It fires up quickly, provides noticeable heat to a cold cottage in minutes and has a nice glowing fire as well. It seems to be a very well built solid unit. It has only been in operation for a week so I guess time will tell as far as long term reliability is concerned, but so far I'm impressed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this stove! This stove is worth every penny! Easy start up, the blower is awesome and heats our top floor of roughly 1500 sq. Feet effortlessly...even on the lowest setting! It's also very nice looking and cozy in our sunroom. (The only down side was the smell for the first time when running the stove. But it went away after the first day. )

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great value. I was a little skeptical because of the low price compared to other top brands but I was pleasantly surprised at the way this stove works. It is easy to install and heats our 1500 square foot home well. I also was happy with the remote. My only recommendation is to make sure you have time to sit down to program the controller.
