Is the walnut supposed to be double sided? The box I received has one side with walnut and the other is the light maple. I assumed it would be walnut on both sides since it’s advertised as walnut and doesn’t show in the description as being one sided.

    Answer This Question

This panel has a plain-sliced walnut decorative face veneer, and is described this way in the product specs. The back is a rotary cut birch and is more functional than decorative. Most thin hardwood plywood products will be described this way. These are intended to be used in applications where only the face is needed to be displayed. Contact me if you have any questions. 800-637-1609. Thanks - Michael

Did they change the quality standards? I just received 4 boxes of the maple, and every single piece has a seam on one side. I like to use this for two sided ornaments, and now I'm stuck with 40 pieces that I can't use.

      1 Answer |
      Answer This Question

The face grade on this panel calls for a whole piece veneer, but the back is rotary cut. which just means that some seams are allowed in the grading spec (in 4x8 form) though it doesn't guaruntee it. Nothing has changed with the grading spec for this product, but it is not ideal for two sided applications in all circumstances. Feel free to call if you would like to discuss 800-637-1609 Michael

We use this product for laser crafts and are seeing a lot of glitter in the bonding layer which affects product quality when using a laser process. Has there been a recent change in materials used in Columbia Forrest products?
        BySep 28, 2025
        1 Answer |
        Answer This Question

The glitter is an identifier used industry wide as a way to identify the manufacturer of a product after the material has been put into use. We know this can be an issue with this particular application and generally specify that none be used when making material for online sales. Contact me at 800-637-1609 so we can discuss options to help. Thanks- 800-637-1609 - Michael

Can this product be used for exterior projects

          Answer This Question

Our products are intended for interior, decorative use only. The adhesive we use is water resistant, but not water-proof. This could lead to delamination after prolonged exposure to moisture. If you have any more questions, call me at 336-291-5869. Thanks - Michael

It cuts great with my 40W Xtool, so I assume it would!

Does this have an MDF core? The description does not state the core material. Other answers suggest not having an mdf core, but the pictures definitely looks like an MDF core.

                Answer This Question

This product is a natural wood core. Most often poplar or fir, but it is a hardwood, not mdf.

Cuts and engraves easily on my laser. Some pieces can be a little warped but just pin them down and you’re good to go

Quality of 1/4" is disappointing compared to 5/32" thickness.
I've been purchasing this wood in both 1/4" and 5/32" in mainly birch and walnut for more than 5 years and I've been happy for the most part with the quality of the 5/32" thickness aside from a few boxes that were practically unusable. There are occasional metal shards inside the core which is frustrating, but the price generally outweighs my frustrations for that thickness. The quality of the 1/4" is a completely different story though. The core of nearly every sheet of 1/4" birch has large gaps and inconsistencies that make a large section of the sheet unusable. It's especially frustrating when cutting larger things that just have to be thrown away because it's not always obvious before cutting that there will be gaps. In addition to that there are often large knots that are poorly filled on the back side of the wood.

                      Disappointed
My most recent box has been a big disappointment. 9 out of 10 pieces are warped and unusable. I am now left scrambling to find something else that will help me get my orders processed. The first couple of boxes I purchased were great but I’m honestly concerned to even try ordering from this brand again.

I apologize for the issues you had with our product. On the product page we do clarify that this is an all natural, all wood product. It does have the potential to move or pull, even after it leaves our mill. If flatness is a top priority, you would want to use an engineered core panel such as MDF, which we offer as well. If I can help, call me at 800-637-1609. Thanks - Michael
                        All Warped
Every single board is warped and can't be flattened no matter what I do. Don't waste your money.

I have been purchasing this wood for 4 years. It was always great quality until this year. The price went up quality went down. Every piece I received in my last 2 shipments is seamed together on the back making it hard to use these pieces. One pice the maple top piece isn’t even adhered all the way. This was always my go to wood for my business. Very disappointing. I know prices go up but quality needs to match the price.

The wood looked beautiful and was perfect for what I needed it for. It did arrive a little warped, but I put heavy items on it, and I was able to engrave and cut it with a laser just fine. I've bought this red oak wood several times and am always satisfied with it.

I use Columbia Forest project panels in my laser, and they cut like butter. I mainly use the 1/8" and 1/4" maple, but have used walnut and birch as well. They are always blemish free and great to work with!
