Questions & Answers

how many strands in wire

Asked by: Joe
Not absolutely sure in this case because of one conductor being aluminum, but it is most likely 16 X 30 gauge.

Is the wire shielded?
Asked by: Luke
No it's not which as I've explained elsewhere wasn't really an issue for my application. However if shielded wire is a necessity then someone like Mouser or Digi-Key are likely places to look(that particularly so with Radio Shack no longer having much presence in most localities). Especially when transmission of low-level signals such as a pre-amplifier input(i.e.: microphone, etc.), or intermediate stage amplifier, is necessary.

I would like to have unsubscribed, but when I tried, the button was disabled. Home Depot: Please, for the love of all that is holy, quit sending me emails about a roll of speaker wire! I've never had a speaker wire that didn't work as expected unless someone cut it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Acceptable quality I would rate this wire as acceptable quality for the price which is fairly low. It handles well, is flexible, separates easily into the two individual wires, and is the correct size as marked. I used an automatic wire stripper to test and it worked well set to AWG18 size, stripped sharply and without any nicks, so the diameter is correct. If I have any issues with this product, it is about the misleading description "copper and aluminum conductors" which implies that one is copper and the other is aluminum, which you might expect given the different colors. However it looks like they are both at least mostly or all aluminum, one with a copper coating. When I scraped off the top layer of the "gold-colored" one, it was very silver in color just like the other wire. A known copper wire of the same size shows no similar color. So this wire is either aluminum with a copper coating, or a mix of mostly aluminum and little copper. Nitpicking I suppose.

Perhaps it is fine as a speaker wire. But its use for any other purpose (In my case for a light duty power cable for 12 volt power systems for astronomical telescopes, amateur radio gear, camping power systems, etc.) is problematic. Some of these applications involve soldered connections, and electronic solder does not 'stick' to aluminum. Its safe current carrying capacity is less than the wire gauge suggests because of the higher bulk resistivity of aluminum, compared to copper. It could also cause problems in crimp type connectors designed for copper or tinned copper wire. So, this 18 gauge wire is electrically more like 19 gauge (or smaller) wire. Even for speakers, this could be a problem, as modern speakers need a good, low impedance connection with the amplifier to work properly, and this cable 'cheats' on that. A good listener might even be able to detect a sonic difference in this case, as the added resistance affects the ability of the amplifier to 'damp' the speaker's movement. This is disappointing because previous CE tech wire I bought over a year ago was all copper. I ended up buying the more expensive Southwire speaker cable because it is copper/tinned copper construction.
