Q:I received my 4 orders of waxed amaryllis but neither one came with instructions on how to use it. They are gifts and they will not know how to take care of it.

A: This was the easiest plant I ever grew! When I received my waxed amaryllis, I put in on a saucer then placed it on the table in front of a window. Within a few days you could see growth. I sat back and watched it grow to almost 20”” where upon three flowers emerged and bloomed. It was beautiful. When they flowers withered, I cut them off and lo and behold new buds and flowers appeared. The amaryllis was gorgeous for a couple of month. I then put plant in dark cellar for next years growth. (No watering at any time. Just turned saucer occasionally)

A: The beauty Martha is you do nothing. The bulb is self contained and blossoms on its own. After the first year in wax, remove the wax and plant. Mine blooms each year.

A: Hello Abby - You can put the amaryllis a refrigerator or a cool/dry place until you're ready for it to start blooming. If you put in the refrigeration, avoid getting it near ethylene as that may cause it to bloom. Ethylene can be found in rotting foods, bananas, and a lot of different fruits. I sent several wax-coated amaryllises as holiday gifts. All of them were a big hit. All were really nice, but the Cottage Farms one grew and bloomed the fastest and ended up the tallest of them all. I don't know whether it just happened to be an early and robust one, or whether Cottage Farms' are all that way. Anyway, all of the recipients have enjoyed enjoyed watching their flowers grow and bloom, and sending photos of the progression. This one has now been in my sister's home for about 7 weeks and the initial stalk, which resulted in 5 beautiful blooms, has finished blooming. Now the second stalk, which was initially very short at the bulb, is now starting to grow. A fun little bright spot while stuck at home during the pandemic. One slight ordering challenge was that I couldn't see how to send it as a gift on HomeDepot.com. So each person received their amaryllis as though they had purchased it, except that it was all charged to my credit card. No one seemed to mind the slight bit of confusion. :-)

I am so disappointed. I sent this to a good friend for Christmas. She has lots of experience with amaryllis. This bulb NEVER bloomed nor grew leaves. A complete dud. She just finally admitted it to me today. I guess will never buy waxed amaryllis from here again. I thought of giving zero stars since the bulb did not grow anything.
