Your packaging says, "silicone tough". does that mean there is or is not silicone in the product?

Asked by: DAD
This product IS NOT a silicone based product...... it's either silicone or it's not, silicone can not be "mixed" into anything.

First let me qualify that I am not a professional caulker, however i have caulked numerous times over the years with various products. I am familiar with other products from DAP so I decided to give this caulk I try. It's cost was middle of the road versus other options available at the store so I thought I should work well. Most of the caulking I was doing was vertical in nature and I was caulking joints between aluminum and steel. Before I applied the caulk I noticed that the consistency seemed a little too "soft" sort of like the consistency of warm mayonnaise. As I applied it had a tendency to not hold its shape and at times began to sag. The bead i was trying to apply was 1/4" wide into relatively tight joints. I eventually had to use caulk spreading tools to try to properly fill the joints and clean up the look but boy was that a mess with the caulk oosing all over the place. Bottom line, I have used other products in similar applications and have much better results.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The trick is to let it dry thoroughly I have tried scores of caulks over thirty years of home maintenance projects, I have settled on Dynaflex for most interior and exterior uses, with the exception of places I know are either going to stay really wet, or need to be painted quickly. DAP's Sidewinder works well for those caveats, but it's harder to clean up and it doesn't finger tool as well. I'm only writing this review because someone was asking me about caulks today, and I couldn't quite think of "Dynaflex" since I didn't have a tube of it handy---so I checked DAP's website for the name, then came across the review from the person who had trouble with paint adhesion. My guess is that the gaps were wide enough to need a little extra drying time. I wait until the whitish color goes away completely, then it's safe to paint. It's flexible, it's easy to work with, it doesn't reek, it's easy to clean up, and it's relatively inexpensive.

I have read through lots of the reviews for this product and decided to offer this opinion. I have been in the trades for thirty plus years, this is the sealant I now regularly select when needing the performance and reliability of a proven product. It flexes and tools better than most caulks which means a nicer looking end result; something unfortunately not ever contractor strives to achieve. I have never had a call back nor witnessed a Dynaflex failure since switching to it. My advice, do not expect a product to do something other than what it is designed to do. Using the proper product in the correct situation will produce the best results every time.

When you're buying caulk, you should be aware that, just like paint, the price is going to indicate the quality. In the caulk family, the cheapest caulk is PAINTER'S CAULK. Painter's caulk (called Dap brand Alex Painters Caulk at Home Depot) is low quality and will crack and fail within a short period of time. Painters will use painters caulk to save money. DON'T LET THEM. The next price point up is PAINTER'S CAULK WITH SILICONE (The main brand that Home Depot sells is called Dap Alex Plus). This is a better choice than plain painters caulk because it is made from acrylic, a more flexible glue that is the primary ingredient. They also add a very SMALL amount of silicone to further prevent cracking. While this is a good choice, but you can still do better. Read on. The next price point up is ELASTOMERIC CAULK. (The main brand Home Depot sells is called Dap Dynaflex 230). Elastomeric caulk is far superior than the previous 2 mentioned. It is flexible up to 50% of it's size and can be painted. It lasts YEARS. Home Depot sells it in a wide variety of colors. When I have contractors doing work on my house for me, I ALWAYS insist that they use Dynaflex 230 Elastomeric Caulk. It may cost $1-$2 more, but it is WORTH IT. In the 2 pictures I submitted, this is a large piece of Dynaflex 230 that was removed from a patio door that was changed out. It was on there for about 2 months. In the first picture noticed how much it will stretch without breaking. I could have stretched it even further (like gum, but stronger), but it was too difficult to stretch it and hold my camera and push the button at the same time! In the second picture, I have twisted it to show the flexibility. The twist is to the left of the piece. Take note that other retailers sell this product also, so it is widely available.

Mostly Clear and White although it comes in other colors. Lasts for years. Smooth it after your done by just wetting you finger (or a sponge) and go over your work. I always keep a few clear and white tubes in my basement, "in case" and they seem to last as partially filled tubes. I just put a fairly large screw in the outlet and remove it and just caulk the next job. I'm sure you can always find something a little cheaper but this is cheap and it works to my satisfaction and lasts!

Caulked around a leaking window; i'm a DIY and decided to use this sealant instead of the more expensive clear silicone; it worked great; the light gray color matched and blends with the gray siding and the leak stopped from the inside of the wind.Definitely would recommend.

Just looked at it and the caulk has separated and I need to do it all again. I don't usually write comments but this has me very upset since I live in Fl where the temp at least 95 degrees.
