Q:What is the width of the cooking area? Could you fit an average-sized brisket in this smoker?

      Answer This Question

A:  You can use either side individually. The larger side for larger char-grilling cooks, the smaller for small grill cooks. Use them together as an offset smoker. You can do anything with this grill, big job or small. That's why I chose this unit. You can also buy the two sides individually and mate them up when you've acquired both.

      by|Jun 4, 2019

A:  Hello kdrez, measurements of the primary grate are 25.19"W x 17.6"D and the secondary grate measures 16.2"W x 15.3"D. These dimensions should be able to hold an average sized brisket. -GHP Group Customer Support

Q:Can this be used without the firebox? That is to say: does this come the door the non-firebox unit comes with?
        by|May 15, 2019

        Answer This Question

A:  Yes it can be used without the fire box. The fire box is actually a complete smaller table top grill that comes with an adapter to make it a fire box. Which I thought was kinda cool.

Great smoker. Like oklahoma joes but will save you money.
Great smoker for family grilling. Quite heavy, which is good. If you want this smoker to last, you should season it before using it to cook food. This is a MUST. Seriously. Also, get a cover.

          Fun
This product’s original design is actually two products -- a Dyna-Glo DGSS287CB-D Portable Tabletop Charcoal Grill & Side Firebox and a Dyna-Glo DGSS443CB-D Heavy-Duty Compact Barrel Charcoal Grill. The Portable Tabletop Charcoal Grill & Side Firebox is designed primarily as a grill for camping and beach grilling. The unit also is designed to mate with a barrel grill to form a horizontal smoker. The Compact Barrel Charcoal Grill is a barrel grill on wheels that will also accept the DGSS287CB-D as an offset smoker fire box. In our case the product was sold as a combined unit but it came with two separate manuals. Basically, it can be used in a number of ways: a basic charcoal grill, a smaller portable recreational grill, and as a horizontal smoker. The product is constructed with very heavy-gauge steel. The features of the product are professional quality including the Cool-touch spring lid handles, the Oversized Steel wheels, the fold-down table, the porcelain enameled steel cooking grates and the temperature gauge. The horizontal smoker concept is to have a fire box offset from the main barrel smoking area with air draw so the heated smoke moves from the firebox through the barrel grill and up through the smoke stack. There is a smoke stack damper and a firebox side damper that is used to control temperature and rate of smoke flow. The charcoal is put in the firebox and ignited. The firebox has a removable, pull out, charcoal grate and ash pan, which offers easy access to fuel and quick disposal of ash. The assembly of the unit with the two different manuals would not be labeled “super easy”. We made several mistakes and had to re-do steps. For instance, there is a bracket that helps secure the firebox to the barrel grill. In one manual, it showed the bend pointing up. In the other manual, it showed it pointing down. We had a hard time getting this right and getting the screw holes to align correctly. Also, once we completed the assembly we noted that the legs of the unit would not laid evenly on the ground. Finally, we did some twisting type bending to finally get everything to lay flat. Unfortunately, in the process of doing this, the holding pin for the bottom shelf broke off. We fired it up to do the 30 minute burn off and to watch how it did. The temperature gauge was right on and steady. There was some smoke that was escaping the from the back of the lid of the barrel. We didn’t have time to actually do a smoked meat at that time, Later we decided to smoke an 8 lb pork butt. Because we’ve never smoked anything before, We asked around to get suggestions. We used charcoal and Hickory wood that we bought by the bag. We think smoking must be a hobby for some because, for us, it was a lot of work to keep the temperature at the correct settings – not hard to make happen – just had to be attentive to it A LOT. We still had smoke esc aping from the lid of the large barrel and from between the out box and the main barrel. We were never successful at getting that almost invisible smoke that the YouTube people talk about. At the end, the pork was at 172 degrees and we called it done. We are looking forward to just grilling and doing a little barbecuing this summer but I’m not real sure that I’m going to do a lot of smoking with this. Maybe with more practice with the fire – it will become more fun. All-in-all the product is a very nice and well-made horizontal smoker – the user could stand a little improvement. The meat tasted really good.

          Love Love Love it!!
This is a great little smoker grill combo. I would say that the only problem with it is the assembly. When attaching the smoker to the grill, the holes do not line up as you can see in my pictures below. I read some reviews on "hobby smokers" by professional grillers and they thumbed their nose at them. However, it does really work and you can get some nice flavors. I would say that the built in temperature gauge is not something to rely on. You'd be better off checking with a separate device. What we've done so far is to grill steaks and corn on the actual grill. We also set up the smoker and did fish. The offset design on traditional brick barbecue pits is where the fire is built in one chamber and the smoke and heat cross the food in another. You build a wood or charcoal fire in the firebox (offset part) The heat is not directly under the meat. The heat and smoke flow through the small port into the larger chamber. They circulate around the food and and then up the chimney. This flow of hot air and wood smoke is the main feature of the offset smoker. With some learning curve time you will be getting ribs and pork shoulders with the dark red smoke rings and briskets with that nice crisp bark. You control the heat and smoke flow in an offset smoker by adjusting the air intake and exhaust vents. (Open vents mean more oxygen, which produces a hotter fire.) In practice, temperatures vary inside the cook chamber, with the end nearest the firebox being the hottest. So in addition to maintaining the fire, you also have to rotate the food or otherwise manage the airflow to avoid uneven cooking. This is also where the temperature of the meat comes into play and why a separate device for checking the internal temperature of the meat is critical.

          Great charcoal smoker
I have had electric smokers in the past, but none of them compare to this smoker. First of all, since it is a large grill it works perfectly for smoking larger items like full racks of ribs. You can easily do both dry and wet smoking by adding a water pan to the smaller smoking portion of the grill, then place the food in the larger portion. The materials for this grill are top notch, every piece of metal is high quality, and the grates are probably the best ones I have seen. I believe this grill will last me a very long time! The grill was also easy to assemble which is always a plus.

          Very High Quality Charcoal Grill-Smoker
I'll review the grill and smoker separately, because they are shipped separately, and both can be used as stand alone's or connected, as pictured. The grill is made of very heavy-duty thick steel, so it's very rugged and should be durable and last for years. The Grill features a handy, sturdy fold-down steel mess shelf in the front. The carton said that an ash removal tool is included, but it wasn't. It's not even listed on the parts list. The gasket for around the inside of the smoke stack was also missing, but is listed on the parts list. I just used high-temp caulk instead. Also, the directions should have you skip the 2 steps about attaching the side door and side handle because you just have to remove them when you attach the smoker to the grill. It should say "skip the next two steps if installing the smoker to this grill." That would have saved me half an hour. The Smoker is of the same high quality durable steel and was easy to assemble and attach to the grill. You don't need the legs attached if you're going to attach the Smoker to the Grill, but again, they don't tell you that until the end, after you've already attached the legs. It doesn't matter though, it looks fine with the legs on. The Smoker part has a convenient pull-out tray to clean the ashes out easily. The grill side doesn't have this feature. The best part of this grill is how flavorful it cooks food!! I forgot how good food cooked with charcoal and smoked really is, since I've been using gas grills for years. Smoked brisket can't be beat cooked in this smoker, it's so tender, juicy and delicious, you just don't get that same flavor with a gas grill. Everything, hot dogs, burgers, chicken, ribs taste so much better on the charcoal grill side. I have videos of the cooking but for the life of me can't figure out how to get them on this review, I'm technically challenged!! I did upload some pics, however, see below.

          Amazing design, great workmanship
Took about an hour to put it together. You can use both ovens together or keep each piece separate. Smaller one would be great for tailgating or camping. Has thermostat on the larger drum. We heated up oven on the 1st use and oiled down and seasoned the grill inside and out. It is a beautiful, well thought out grill and smoker. We used both drums on our first cook out. Preheated and had more than enough space for all kinds of food and had a lot of room left for bigger cookouts. It is well balanced with both drums combined into one unit and the large wheels make it easy to move around. The company does not make a cover yet but I found one from a Longhorn grill that fits this configuration including the extra drum and the smoke stack.. This grill, taken care of, will last a good long time for many years of great grilling. All pieces were in the box and it went together perfectly. I do recommend if you want to be a grill whisper that this is the grill/smoke that you want to whisper too. I prefer charcoal over butane and this was a awesome choice. Love the bottom shelf, the shelf in front of the larger drum. Smaller drum has a flat surface to use hold something or to keep things warm if something cooks slower some than other food. In short.......it is perfect and I love it.

Heavy duty. Expect it to last quite a while. Easy to keep temp. Pro tip: use one of those square, vegetable grilling pans for the charcoal when grilling smaller meals in the main barrel. Just set it on the charcoal grate. Very efficient.
