Q:Does this sprayer work well with lacquer
by|Nov 2, 2021
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Yes the HV5500 works very well with real lacquer. You should have the 1.5mm needle/nozzle set for fine finishing. It comes with this kit - https://www.homedepot.com/p/Earlex-Spray-Station-Paint-Sprayer-with-1-5-mm-Stainless-Steel-Needle-HV5500US2/204786850

    Answer This Question

A:  The HV5500 itself is not different at different stores. But the package may be. All 5500's come with the 2mm needle in the gun. Some packages also include the 1.5mm needle set for fine finishing. Otherwise, they are all the same, get the best deal you can find. Call for more clarification at 1-888-783-2612.

      Answer This Question

A:  Our HV5500 comes with a bleeder style gun, but for a non-bleeder gun look at our HV6003 sprayer https://www.homedepot.com/p/Earlex-Spray-Port-HVLP-Sprayer-with-Pressure-Feed-Gun-0HV6003PUS/205368881?keyword=earlex+hv6003&semanticToken=21300000111_20191122124955173116_9gd2+21300000111+%3E++cnn%3A%7B0%3A0%7D+cnr%3A%7B7%3A1%7D+cnd%3A%7B4%3A0%7D+cne%3A%7B8%3A0%7D+cnb%3A%7B9%3A1%7D+cns%3A%7B5%3A0%7D+cnx%3A%7B3%3A0%7D+st%3A%7Bearlex+hv6003%7D%3Ast+oos%3A%7B0%3A1%7D+br%3A%7Bearlex%7D%3Abr+rt%3A%7Bhv6003%7D%3Art+dln%3A%7B583954%7D+qu%3A%7Bearlex+hv6003%7D%3Aqu

Q:Which nozzle works best for spraying latex??
        by|Oct 2, 2019
        2 Answers
        Answer This Question

A:  A house painter would use the 2 mm that comes in the gun and they would thin as little as possible (5%), if at all. A finisher would use the 1.5 mm, thin the latex about 10%-20% with water. For more spraying and finishing tips, call us at 1-888-783-2612.

        by|Oct 3, 2019

A:  Not good for latex. Latex too thick. I tried had to thin it down a lot, then I had to put extra coats on to cover.

            Works as advertised
Was reluctant to purchase an HVLP system. Talked to several painting professionals and professional paint dealers. They all said that I needed a 4 turbine system to spray latex paint to get a furniture finish. Did my own research and watched the videos on the internet about this HVLP unit. Well let me tell you it worked great. The best part is the company that sells this unit explains that it is important to get the material you are spraying to a certain viscosity and provide a viscosity cup to make sure you get it right. Right off the bat I mixed and thinned the water based paint according to the viscosity cup using DISTILLED water, not tap water. Tap water contains contaminates. I used Kelly Moore Dura Poxy. What a great finish. No orange peel, no runs. Just a real nice finish. I painted a particle board tool box case bright red. First with a coat of primer, light sanding and then the final. Could not be happier. Easy clean up. Works Great and about one third the cost of a 4 turbine unit. If I ever wear this thing out, I'm going to get another one. Follow the directions and watch the video that comes with the unit before you start. If you do, and use a good quality paint, you will not be disappointed.

            Perfect For Woodworking
After finally figuring out that the Graco sprayers are way over kill for woodworking projects I purchased the Earlex Spray Station along with the 1,5 mm optional needle kit. After my first attempt at building a custom picture frame I painted it (photo included in this review, but hard to see), After sanding I sprayed the frame with the new Earlex 5500 Sprayer using the 1.5mm needle. It came out great. The thing I like the most is the fact that I can spray inside my small shop with almost no overspray. I just put down some paper right around the project, about 12" around the wood and that's all I needed. With both of my Graco units that is not remotely possible. The spray pattern accuracy of this unit is excellent. On my next project I'm planning on spraying about 48 linear feet of fluted moulding. It took me several hours of tedious hand painting with small brushes the last time I did that project. I'm betting this time it will take less than 15 minutes and will look 3 times better. If you are doing woodworking projects like furniture, cabinets or anything else I highly recommend this product. I count it among my most valuable tools in the wood shop. It's too bad that Home Depot does not sell this in their stores. As of now it's only available online. I think that is a mistake.

            Disappointing finish
I purchased this unit to spray kitchen cabinets. After reading a number of paint reviews, I selected Benjamin Moore Advanced paint and primer. It is an waterborne alkyd enamel, a water-based paint that acts like an oil-based paint. The 5500 has a single air volume adjustment yet there are other variables that are introduced by the person spraying such as spray speed and distance from the project. The project ended up with a fair amount of orange peel. After trying different spray distances and speed, the orange peel continued. I spoke a number of times with Earlex Tech support and they tried to be helpful. Some recommended a slower spray rate, others suggesting moving faster. Some suggested a lighter coat; others a heavier coat. At this point, I am willing to sand to the primer and begin the spraying again of I had confidence that I could achieve a smoother result. Unfortunately, at this point I do not. Some things to be aware of as it relates the the 5500. The unit sprays a constant stream of air that begins the moment the unit is turned on ( even when not spraying). As a result, the air stream when not depressing the trigger can send up dust that may be laying on the floor as well as move plastic or even cloth drop cloths. Secondly, the hose that connects the turbine to the spray gun is rather large (about 1-1 1/2”) and is attached to gun simply by inserting it into a hole in the back of the gun. Because there is. I physical locking mechanism, the hose can dislodge when spraying, which can create a mess. I have had to use tape to keep them attached. A simple lock would have been a good upgrade. And because of the large hose attached to the upper part of the rear of the gun, it tends to be too-heavy and easy to tip over. At this point, I can’t recommend this product. I definitely hoped it would work as described. A caveat to note is that there could be variables beyond the spray system to achieve a smooth finish so keep that in mind as you consider a HVLP system.

We're sorry to hear that. We're you using a 1.5mm needle set for a fine finish, or were you using the 2mm that comes in the sprayer? The 1.5mm is for your cabinetry. Did you thin the paint? Up to 20% is fine, but usually about 10% is sufficient. Were you spraying from 6" away, because that's the magic number. The 5500 is a bleeder gun (industry standard) and the only control on the gun is paint flow. The air is constant and doesn't change. Too much paint in the air can cause spitting which always becomes orange peel. Cut down on paint flow to eliminate spitting. Was the project lying down or vertical? If vertical, you probably weren't applying enough paint. Call us again and ask for the finishing expert - 1-888-783-2612. WagnerSprayTech

              Gets the job done
I bought the sprayer to finish a Murphy bed I made. This is my first time using a sprayer so I wasn’t exactly sure of how it would turn out. I’ve been very happy with the results and the ease of use. Learning the components, adjustments, and technique went quickly, and the package included a helpful How To DVD. My only gripe is that the sprayer is pretty loud, as other reviewers have commented. However, I haven’t used other devices so can’t comment on whether this is standard across other brands. All in all, a good product and value.
