would it mulch egg shell.

Asked by aj March 11, 2021

Possibly, but I wouldn’t recommend it. This baby is for chopping up tree branches.

Can I shred styrofoam packing materials.

Asked by lio October 14, 2020

I would think you can because it's Firm enough to feed but you might have to cut it using electric Knife to fit the shoot.

Asked by abcd4xyz September 7, 2020

Yes, it does fine with these. I would recommend that you allow the branches to dry out completely.

Very little. You have to assemble the "trolley" frame with wheels and also hold the catch bin.

Do you carry replacement blades for the Earth wise chipper shredder?

Asked by Mike June 17, 2020

How noisy is this shredder?

Asked by ThomW June 11, 2020

I've had mine for a grand total of 3 days, and I do like it so far. While standing and feeding branches into the intake chute, the noise isn't too bad. It sounds about like an average-sized wet/dry vacuum. However, I noticed that the noise is focused at the lower level. So that when I bent over to pick up the next branch, I got a blast of motor noise in my ear until I stood up again. Doing that over and over again got to me after a fairly short while. I found that the $10-$15 pair of "ear muff" protectors that I wear when mowing the lawn, solves it. Without the protectors, you'll be ready to step away from it after 15-20 minutes -- or less. With the protectors, you can go for hours without any problem. Before I bought the Earthwise, I investigated others (Sun Joe, Wen, etc.), and I'd rate the noise level of the Earthwise about in the middle. Hope this helps.

Will this shred cardboard?

Asked by Brian June 10, 2020

It's supposed to shred leaves. If you can feed the cardboard it'll probably shred the cardboard. Give it a try don't listen to these other boneheads a little cardboard won't hurt it.

Good and Bad
Several things attracted me to this chipper after my old McCullough 1600 died the final time. Several models from several companies all seemed to use this form factor: diagonal feed. I liked the hopper on this model because I want to shred a lot of leaves and wanted to fill the hopper and feed from it. Other models seem to require small feeding loads. I also liked the rigid bin underneath with good capacity. Manufacturing quality seemed good. Assembly was easy and intuitive. Operational noise was less than the old MCS1600 but I had nothing newer to compare. It still requires ear protection. And eye, and gloves. Those are the good. Here are some bad. 1) The feed opening is a slot with larger circular holes for branches on each end, sort of like a dumbbell. The provided feeder stem just fits to force material into the circular ends, but the stem end could be better designed if it was concave (cupped) to let you put it on the end of a branch to feed it. The feeder handle is plump and comfortable to grip, but would be better designed if thinner like a paddle to allow you to poke leafy material into the narrower slot. Seems like a logical design overlooked. I watched a video where the reviewer complained there's no hook to hang the paddle. Not a problem as it fits nicely in the chipper's pull handle. See the pic. 2) Reviewers have said this unit is prone to jamming. I found that, too. Part of that problem is a plastic axle with tiller blades (see pic) stretching across the debris exit way below the cutting blades, just above the bin. Just one branch laying across that exit (on the useless tiller) will catch the next one and the next until it backs up. I think the tiller blade is just there to keep your hands out of harm's way but the distance is very far from the cutting blades and I removed the plastic tiller. Problem solved. 3) When the unit does back up and needs to be opened, it requires eleven (11) full rotations of the locking screw to unlock it. That seems excessive beyond safety and it's a pain in the neck for frequent clogs. 4) After about a dozen hours of operation over a month, the unit seemed to be burning branches and I needed to flip the reversible cutting blades. The unit design makes that difficult with 8 screws securing the metal feeding guide, one almost inaccessible. Once the guide was off, one blade came off but the others were frozen even with WD40 and Liquid Wrench and a lot of careful work. A dedicated hex tool is provided but was unable to break the freeze. I returned the unit, but it was too late for a cash credit, just a store credit. Remember that if you think this unit won't work for you after a few hours operation.

Fibrous stringy wood bungs it up
Works great. Chipped up pruned branches. Got clogged n i had to dismantle the unit twice in one hour. Easy just time consuming with all the screws. Advise users to chip one branch st a time. Got carried away n i was inserting grabfuls of sticks together....causes the clog. Also i found really fibrous branches like lilac tended to wind around the intermal rotor n led to motor seizing. I will only use apple n cherry wood to mske my mulch as it didnt bung up the machine when chipped alone.

The shredder worked well for branches up to and inch in diameter. I shredder 20 bins (10 lawn bags). At least half of my project was on green branches. You just need to make sure the orientation of the branches is correct as you load them into the hopper. The shredder seems to be good quality. I purchased a 12 gauge extension cord to ensure the motor was getting full voltage.

The Earthwise chipper does an excellent job and small branches...
The Earthwise chipper does an excellent job and small branches (1 1/2” thick). It also chews up palm fronds but after about 50 you have to clean the blades as it reduces the fronds to sawdust and that gums up the cutting process. The top shroud is useless and it is not needed. The design is very poor and it keeps getting knocked off by branches being fed into the chipper. The advertisement says the Earthwise will do leaves. It does not do leaves other than flushing them through the blades barely cutting them up. All in all this is well worth the money. I reduced 10 40 gallon garbage sacks of dead branches to one sack!
