About This Product

The Edsal UR185P-BLK 5-shelf freestanding shelf unit has shelves made of particle board to support an 800 lb. per shelf capacity and a 4000 lb. total capacity when the weight is distributed evenly across all shelves. This unit has double-riveted beams that lock into double-rivet holes on the corner post for structural security. The corner post rivet holes on this unit are punched at 1-1/2 in. intervals for precise adjustment to desired shelf height. The steel rack has a black powder coat finish to resist corrosion. This unit is open on all 4 sides to facilitate access to shelf contents from any angle. The posts on this unit have a 2-piece design so it can be assembled vertically to create one 72 in. H x 36 in. W x 18 in. D unit or assembled horizontally to create two 36 in. x 36 in. x 18 in. units, 1 unit with 2 shelves and 1 unit with 3 shelves. (H is height, the vertical distance from lowest to highest point; W is width, the horizontal distance from left to right; D is depth, the horizontal distance from front to back.) This shelf unit has a rivet lock design for boltless assembly. Assembly instructions are included. A rubber mallet (sold separately) is recommended for assembly.

Q:It's mentioned that usable space between the upright posts is something like 33". A HD heavy-duty small moving box is 17x11x11. Has anyone successfully put three small HD heavy-duty 11" wide boxes on a single shelf? Or do the posts make it too narrow?

        Answer This Question

A:  It should work ok. Posts are 1.25” wide each , so 36” unit width less 2-1/2” (posts) = 33-1/2”.

          Storage shelves
I wanted a unit that would accommodate most / all of the miscellaneous items and boxes scattered around on my garage floor. Though not industrial strength, I am well pleased with these units. I needed two and they fit perfect in the space I measured for. Assembly was easy and as usual, please read the instructions. I would buy again and will definitely recommend them for light to moderate use. There are not flimsy, once assembled, but I do plan to bolt them together using a 1/2X1 trim piece between the two for added rigidity and aesthetics. I assembled these myself but an extra hand always helps. Price point is great and the units were delivered to my store as scheduled. I was promptly notified by Home Depot and picked them up no hassle. You won’t be disappointed.

          Great Shelf. Easy Assembly!
After researching online, I realized that there are only a few different styles of metal shelving units and most are made by one or two companies, but rebranded for different stores. For example, this "Edsal" unit is identical to the "Muscle Rack" sold by Home Depot IN STORES. It's identical, because Edsal makes Muscle Rack shelving. What's NOT identical is the price. Pricing varies WILDLY between different retailers and online sources. I picked this up at Homedepot.com, shipped free to store, but IN Home Depot stores, the same shelf sells for $90 more. The only negative with the online option is that the price fluctuates - sometimes daily. I watched the price go up $5 then up a few more, then down, and I just looked and it's showing as $100 more than what I paid. BUY BASED ON PRICE - they are all the same unit. Paying more does not automatically equate to a heavier steel, or better overall quality - it's all the same - just look closely at the photos and model numbers when comparing units. All that said, it's a great, medium-duty shelf. It was super-easy to assemble by myself, right in the space it was going to be placed - no need to have a flat, open work area to "lay it on it's side" - just build it right where you want it to stay. Anyone complaining of difficulty is either working with items damaged/bent in shipping, or an out of spec item was not caught before being boxed, OR they could not screw in a light bulb with printed directions in front of them. This was literally the easiest "assembly" of my life. I used a rubber mallet, but if you have a short piece of 2x4, that could be used in place of a hammer to "tap" the parts into place instead. My ONLY complaint is that it does not have SIX shelves and it's pretty unclear if more braces can be purchased and added. I purchased it to store canned goods. It really needs at least one more shelf - preferably two - for that purpose. Note that the 18" deep shelf will hold 6 cans of vegetables front to back with just a little room left. I have an old, metal-shelf "canning shelf" that has 12" deep shelves and only three cans fit - 4 if you let the one in back hang over the edge a little. I considered a 24" deep shelf unit, but I think it would be hard to get to the things in back to rotate foods. I wish I had the room to buy more of them!

We already have 3 of these shelves, this is the 4th. My husband bought the first 3 for me years ago and I tried to find a 4th, mistakingly buying something off of Amazon that looked like it but was soooo far from it. Let’s just say it was a nightmare that I returned. These shelves are simple and easy to put together A few taps with a hammer) and feel sturdy. I was able to put it together in one room and slide it to another without anything falling part. We’re using it to organize supplies. My only issue with this order was that the main shelving posts had some kind of industrial grease on them. I scrubbed it off with paper towels and it’s fine.

These shelves are Fabulous. The assembly instructions are a little bit confusing, but once the first set went together the rest were a breeze. We bought 9 sets to organize our storage room that was stacked floor to ceiling. These shelves hold eveything!! I can't believe how much space we have in our storage room now. The shelves are easy to label as well. Planning to buy more for the garage!!

Edsal made a couple of improvements to these shelving units since I last purchased them. Always was a great product and now, even better! The ability to customize the unit to accommodate your specific storage needs is one of the best features. You can always readjust the shelves if needed. Very sturdy and can be used anywhere you desire organization. This product ensures I make the most of the available space in my storage sheds. No tools needed to assemble. If you get one, it's likely you go back to Home Depot for more upon realizing how beneficial these units are.

Seems to work OK. Easy to assemble. I'm not sure about the weight claims for the long term. The shelves seem kinda wimpy. Especially in a humid environment. Only time will tell. Rubber/plastic protectors are missing. They go on top of the uprights to protect against sharp edges. Come on HD, get it right if you want 5 stars!! Poor quality control will hurt you.

Very easy to put together. You'll need a rubber hammer to tap the shelves into place, but that's the only tool you'll need. Very sturdy. Helps to have a third hand when you start each shelf.
