Questions & Answers

Does it have an internal battery

Asked by: Paul
The thermostat has a battery backup using 3 AAA batteries. The unit is normally powered by house current.

Does the display on the thermostat stay lit all the time as pictured in the add?
Asked by: ELB
My bad. Askj is correct. You have to have c wire attached but turn it on and have it stay lit, it is in the app under settings/advanced settings. I just stalled it and it works like a charm.

Lost internet connection

Before I buy, I have to ask, Is there some kind of backup if you lose internet connection ?
Asked by: OverKill
It's supposed to maintain the schedule that's active if the wi-fi connection is lost, and believe me, the wi-fi connection on mine drops out a lot. But my schedule still functions without the wi-fi. The schedule can't be revised without the wi-fi connection. The wi-fi connection on mine drops out every few monts and I have to delete the thermostat in the app and reinstall it. A real pain.

Emerson Sensi Wi-Fi Thermostat for Smart Home is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 496.

The Sensi St-55 WiFi thermostat really is excellent, combining cool remote home control features and value in a stylish package. Its design and execution is very well thought out. The case and wiring is pretty standard for any thermostat produced this century, however, the software and processing hardware make this unit great. The installation was uber easy, complete with a smart online installation application that validated the configuration and the installer's understanding of it and then graphically showed which wires to connect to which terminal (see pictures). This has, hands-down, the best installation instruction guide I've ever used. It took just over 30 minutes from installation app install to operating the working device. The unit has a built-in bubble level (see picture) that makes delivering a cosmetically correct install a breeze. After supplying the proper network security credentials using the installation app on the iPhone, the unit connected right away to my network using the 802.11n 2.4GHz band on my cable company supplied dual band Arris cable modem/router. It will only work on the 2.4GHz band. There are some routers that are incompatible, so it would be good to check to make validate yours is compatible before purchasing using their excellent web site. The application that Emerson supplies for this unit is another example of great usability and well thought-out features. The splash screen gives you all the basic information you would expect (inside temp, operating mode and program schedule) and also adds local weather data including current temp, forecasted high & low temp, forecast icon and humidity. It allows you to manually adjust temp, set the operating mode and control the fan. The selectable operating modes include an auto setting that switches between heart and cool as the program calls for. It defaults to two program schedules, one for weekdays and one for weekends. You can create multiple schedules using a very intuitive user interface (see picture). The graphical depiction of the program is awesome. You can name the device in case you have more than one zone and have separate programs for each. The app also allows you to lock out users from using the manual controls and enable features to start your unit early to allow it to reach a programmed temp at a specified time. The app also supports geofencing which has been around for many years, but I'd not seen used on thermostat before. It is really quite a clever way to save energy costs. It automatically adjusts the temp 3 degrees when you are more than 3 miles from the device (assuming you have not disabled location access). The unit and app will also automatically deliver alerts, which I've not seen as they represent likely problems with the HVAC unit). The only thing to watch on this the need for 2AA batteries used to power the wifi if you don't have a 24V "C" wire. The unit will continue to operate the programmed schedules even if the wifi goes dead or the connection is lost, but the maintenance of the batteries is something that has to looked after periodically. it's easy to replace them. To reduce battery drain, you can adjust the PSP settings on some routers to slow the polling rate down, but that's not trivial and may cause issues with other devices on your network. The unit has been reliable, even with my occasionally flaky network (we live in a rural area). It reconnected easily whenever the infrequent connectivity losses occurred (no fault of the device). Bottom line is that we are delighted with this unit. Emerson hit a home run with this device with excellent hardware/software engineering and usability. Looking forward to additional software upgrades.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing This Emerson Sensi Wi-Fi Thermostat for Smart Phone is Amazing. The Set Up was a little confusing at first. I put the Sensi app on my Smart Phone and tried to install per instructions, but hit a snag and used common sense to hook up wiring. ( color to color code ) Called Sensi Support to help with Wi-Fi and they were Great. Up and running and the Best Part is I can control Heat and Air from anywhere from my iPhone. Easy to Read Control Panel. Amazing to Me. Love It.

I had two Sensi thermostats (one provided as a replacement for the first from Sensi) which inaccurately read temperature. We had to go into Advanced Settings and change Temperature Offset numerous times to bring it back to the normal temperature. Readings were as far off as 5 degrees. Sensi replaced the first one purchased at Home Depot and we continued to have inaccurate readings (compared with two other thermostats in the same room and area). Sensi customer service was horrible as the reps said we had error codes on our thermostat but couldn't provide an explanation as to what these codes meant and only offered a replacement option rather than any troubleshooting. I continued to try to follow up with their customer service as the second thermostat had the same problem and they indicated they would get back to me which they failed to follow up. Would not recommend and would not purchase this product again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simple, Intelligent, Easy to Use WI-FI Thermostat for Everyone! Out with the old and in with the new! It seems that my home has been retrofitted with the newest tech that I can get! The addition of the Sensi Wi-Fi to the basement level of the house allows me to keep much better track of the temp than previously available. I do a lot of art and music in my basement and when I have band rehearsals down there, I need to make sure it's cool. I'm able to use the quality of this Thermostat to keep a more consistent and cool space. My old one, installed by the original home builder, wasn't dependable and never seemed to work as it should have. When I set this one to 64, it stays there and keeps my entire basement level cool. The installation was so easy. I had it out of the box and installed in less than 1 hour. Mind you, I am very methodical about installs like this and really took my time. There is an amazing feature called GeoFencing built into it. It uses your phone's location to tell where you are. If you are home, it stays on. When gone, it runs at a reduced capacity so that you don't run up the power bill. I think you'll see the ease of use for yourself. The App is simple and robust, with a schedule that you can create. I recommend this model for your home.

Installation was straightforward. Connecting to the WiFi took multiple attempts and calls to Sensi support. Finally, connected to WiFi and now I am trying to set the schedule. OMG. I am not stupid but a few instructions would be helpful. There are none- paper or online. Why do programmers think everyone thinks like they do? Anyway, this is a MAJOR pain. Maybe I will figure out how to schedule what I want. I have scheduled other non-WiFi thermostat with no problem. Unless you are a computer geek I do not recommend this.

Where I live summer days in July are typically high 90's to 105. I was going on vacation for a week and wanted to control the thermostat remotely. I wanted to set it at 90 when we left, and morning the of day coming home set it to 75. Using my iphone app at RV park staying at, changed to thermostat from 90 to 75 and came home to a nice cool home. Following the instructions, the thermostat was easy to connect to my home wifi network. While I have the C wire, I didn't connect it and not necessary with this system. For those that want simple and not to expensive of a wifi thermostat I recommend giving this a try.

This replaced our 2 year old Honeywell programmable thermostat that decided it had enough and stopped properly controlling our furnace. The Sensi literally took a matter of minutes to install, and the second I attached the faceplate, my furnace instantaneously fired right up after days of fiddling around with it. I can confirm that a "C-wire"/Common wire (which you may have back there or you might not), is not needed for the Wi-Fi functionality. I didn't use a C-wire; after downloading the app, it was just a matter of minutes of easily syncing it to our home Wi-Fi, before I was controlling the thermostat from my phone. I was impressed. I also really like how slim it is; very sleek looking against the wall.
