A:  I no longer have the caliper. Home Depot website says SR44W. Check if you have the same Empire model.

Q:Auto Off. Don't believe this product has it and I will be returning. Already drained the battery that came in it. If I don't remember to turn it off it's still on when i pick it up later. If someone can tell me theirs does turn itself off and how long it takes please let me know. Thanks in advance.

Answer This Question

A:  Read through the instructions on the one I purchased about a year ago. Nowhere did I see any mention of an "auto off" feature. I had never assumed it had one as this is not what I would consider a high end item. I bought mine to measure cartridge cases for reloading and it works quite well for that. I guess I wouldn't consider forgetting to turn it off as a problem with the item itself.

Q:0.25 mm is approximately 0.01 inches. 0.0005 inches is approximately 0.0127 mm. That's a huge difference in terms of expected accuracy. Description needs to be updated with the correct info

Empire digital caliper 2789: Mine would not work when I pressed the "On" button. When I opened the battery door, I noticed one of the tabs to hold the door in place was broken. I also found the battery was in place but seem stained at the contacts. Luckily, they included a spare battery which I inserted. It worked fine afterward except the door is slightly misaligned because of the broken tab. As I was wondering why there was a dead battery in a new set of calipers, I have noticed now that it does NOT automatically turn off as advertised on the back of the package. It has to be manually turned off. Speaking of advertising, this caliper is labeled has having an SPC RS232 capability. It does not. When you open the "SPC Outdoor Door" you do not find any interface capability...just molded plastic. The back of the package clearly indicates SPC interface. Mine has none. In my opinion, this is clearly false advertisement and deceptive. This is most disappointing as Empire's slogan is "Built on Trust". See the pictures for the broken battery door tab and the non-existent SPC capability.

It is quite accurate. It feels pretty strong and sturdy. The unit itself, I'd probably give 5 stars. However, the original battery that was in the unit, at the time I bought it, was dead. The plastic battery cover is quite thin. Mine came with a scratch. I'd recommend zeroing it every time prior to using it.

        Getting the Exact measurement
These are really nice for exact measurement. These are not something you get at a discount/warehouse/special deal place. These are steel and very nice. A large digital readout is easy to read and can be adjusted at any time. The off/on switch is a plus, unless you forget to shut it off. It is easy to use and is very free flowing with the thumb wheel movement. You can get a depth or width reading so easy and if it needs to be the same across the project you can lock the moveable gauge so you get the same reading every time. Nice storage case so it doesn't get beat up in the tool box and it stays nicer longer. I like the feel of the gauge, its got a hefty feeling, not like a plastic one or a pot metal one it feels good in your hand. I love mine. Be Safe

        Good Quality Caliper
I'll start with just a bit of my background as a worked at a FAA Repair Station and routinely used Calipers, Micrometers down to ten-thousand of an inch. Only big difference here is my old Caliper measured in one ten-thousand increment's not five ten-thousand as with this caliper. But to clear the air here, I can't see any time for home use you would need this even if doing you own auto repairs. The caliper slide it's self is Hardened Stainless that is well marked for manual reading. The digital read out is easy to read, both in inches or MM mode, but I did find the cover a bit on the cheap side. You can measure both inside and outside measurements as well as depth, up to 6 inches. There is also a "Fractional Equivalents'" card from10th of an inches to MM, and to Fractions both 1/32nd and 1/64th of an inch, very handy and time saver, as the Caliper reads out in tens of an inch on the slide and ten-thousand diagonally. There's a nice case that the Caliper fits in and held inplace. I kicked myself many times for selling many of my tools after retiring, as some were not replaceable. And a Caliper is one as it seamed I needed one every other project or so one way or the other, now here one quality Caliper that will not drain your back account. you will be well served with these Calipers for years to come.

        Same as jjpetro
Came with dead battery, does not automatically power off, no UART port for SPC data, and then one day power on unstable because of broken battery cover exactly as in jjpetro's picture.

I question the accuracy of the instrument from experience. I feel like it’s off just a tiny bit, (but a tiny bit can be a lot when talking .01.)

          Avoid
This thing is junk. The screen flickers, the numbers wander, and it turns itself on for no reason and kills the battery.

Stopped working even after new battery
Used for about one year then it stopped working. Will not turn on even with new battery. Started to notice problems after a few months of use. So I kept going back to my tried and true manual calipers. Would not recommend.
