How do you clean this off and prep it for paint?

I'd use brake cleaner and a rag wipe down it will dry in few minutes, gets the oil off so the paint will stick.

Will they cut this to size

I don't think so, they have a saw to cut wood but I don't think they cut angle iron. Its easy to cut, I used a cheap rotary tool like a dremel (tool shop brand?) and the dremel metal cutting discs. Chopped right through it. I guess ask, they might do you a favor.

Leaving plain steel outdoors is not recommended since it is plain steel and will rust.

is plain steel equivalent to carbon steel?

Asked by mark July 20, 2020

unless steel is labeled as "Non-ferrous", it has Carbon (typically 3-6% for mild grade 360 steel) Tool steels have many differant elements (cobalt, validium, nickel- ect.) stainless must have 13% Chrome ("D-2" is a high grade tool steel that almost never rusts, but only has 12% Chrome) the angle iron here is 360 mild steel , hot rolled, not brittle- good for medium strength fabrication, easily welded or mechanically attached w/ bolts

Is it 1 1/2 on both angles or in total?

You would need to place a special order through the ProDesk for a 5 foot length as this is not a size we carry in store or online.

Are small pieces left over for scrap metal

Generally this item is not cut in store so there would not be left over scrap metal. Please confirm this with your local Home Depot.

Convenient to buy when you only need a small piece but more expensive per ft. than a 20ft length from the local steel supply. I ended up buying 4 4ft. pieces for this project though. It's price was about 30% less than for the same length at other stores. HD has become my go to for products like this as they have a greater variety at better prices than other stores. Used this metal to build a winch drive trailer tug frame

I needed some 1 1/2 inch angle iron to reinforce the fender brackets of my boat trailer. The 3/16 inch material is very uniform and cut easily using a cutting disc on my angle grinder. After filing the edges I drilled 7/16 inch holes, then used a wire brush and some brake cleaner to wipe down the surface, then primed and painted the fabricated brackets. The material is sturdy and blends in well on the trailer.

It was shipped in a heavy-duty cardboard tube and arrived in perfect condition. The advertised measurements were spot-on. Overall length is 48 ins., it's 3/16 ins. thick and the legs are 1-1/2 by 1-1/2 ins. I didn't order this with any particular purpose in mind but I like to keep assorted pieces of aluminum and steel around the shop. I hate being in the middle of a project and realize I have to stop and run to the store. I couldn't find a written warranty but as with most products Home Depot sells there is a 90 return policy.
