Q:What is that notch/bulge in the middle for?

A:  They are security tabs that lock the two leaves of the hinges together when the door is closed. The tab on the right side locks with the hole on the left side, locking the hinges in place for the Everbilt 4 in. Square x 5/8 in. Radius Matte Black Squeak-Free Door Hinge.
